I now base my army on Saurus blocks, and as I am playing small games, I have few fast units, aside from skinks and salamanders (one of each). I imagine I'd struggle against cavalry/chariot heavy armies. Skink priest; 40 Saurus; 10 SSk.; and Salamander - any tips using this list?
Run the priest in the saurus unit (to the side), that way he has much better protection than in the skirmishing unit. The Sally can advance and protect the flank. The saurus unit is huge, so that will draw the most fire. Screen it with the skirmishers. Get it across the board as quickly as possible. Get some chameleons or terradons to hunt warmachines and you should be good. With that many saurus, you should think of getting a few more and making 2 units of 25-30. You could also get some cold ones and use them as a hammer (saurus as the anvil). A scar-vet will make the saurus hit much harder too.
If heavy cav is worrying you get a scar vet, maybe with a GW. If you don't overupgrade you can still have the priest. Another option is, points permitting, to giv the vet a BSB too, don't want that huge block getting scared off by a lucky spell or something.
In small games (1500 or less) I like to to have two units of 20 Saurus; gives me a few more tactical options. I have run both ways but feel that two long sword approch is better than just one big hammer. just my $.02
Sorry, I meant I had two units of 20 Saurus. I played a game against Skaven today. I couldn't kill the doomwheel. It was a draw.
Skink poisons will work fairly well against that thing. It still sucks all around though. Those things are a beast at any points level.
It chased my general around - 250 points to him. However, the skinks sniped his general turn 1, and distracted the Plague Monks, allowing my Saurus to wipe them out.
