I am using GW metallic paints, specifically Balthasar gold. For some reason, when I paint smooth surfaces like armor, it seems to run and seep into the recesses. I didn't thin them at all. What am I doing wrong?

Get a tooth pick, and stir the paint, a lot then close the lid real good and shake it up a bunch, and see if it thickens up.
Often with metallic paint the metal flake can settle to the bottom and the top of the bottle ends up being mostly paint medium.

I shook bottles before but the result is paint drying, leaving the lid stuck. the next time I open a paint lid stuck with dried paint, I get something that looks like a CSI murder scene and an empty bottle

It's down to Balthasar gold no matter how much I stir/shake mine it still won't give a good consistent coat.

I add a drop of liqutex dry retarder (could use water) onto a mixing pallet (plate) and apply 3 thin layers to build up the base before adding shading and highlights.

    hope this helps.

you can also use "Future"* floor wax to thin paint,
    it's basically thinned acrylic medium.

*goes by different names in different countries.
but generally looks something like this....
