Movement tray and base colour scheme help? New pics!

So I got a bunch of these and wanted a similar effect to how they've done theirs.



I was thinking this process would make something similarish? Feedback would be lovely.

Base : Snakebite leather/Balor Brown or Desert Yellow/Tallarn Sand

Wash : Sepia or devlan's mud

Drybrush : Bleached bone/Ushabti Bone and perhaps Karak Stone (not sure on the older equivalent.



What do you guys think? Also on another point I've done a colour scheme similar to http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/children-of-qukaihuan-update-carnosaur-painted.7894/. Reckon this will look good?

Sorry for the double post!

I was just looking at Army Painter spray and wonder if getting one of these, then washing over the top along with a bit of drybrushing would yield good results and also be a little quicker for mass production.

Has anybody used these sprays? Can you wash over the top of them? Which colour would anybody suggest?

In my opinion Army Painters sprays and washes are excellent. I use the Leather Brown one and Strong Tone Wash for my Orcs & Goblins.

To get the result above quite quikly I suggest you use either the Leather Brown, with Strong Tone Wash and then drybrush up to bone.

Or you use a bone colored one with Strong Tone Wash and then drybrush, but that would look like bone more or less.

I had a great deal of trouble with one of the Army Painter's red (I think Dragon Red?) sprays, but I think the local humidity had a lot to do with it. Their washes are excellent though! I've been using their dark shade on my Chaos Space Marines (which can be seen on Secondsphere.org in the hobby section). Basecoat>drybrush>shade>success!

I've been buying a ton of these movement trays and bases, because they really are very good. Just watch out for the Stegadon base - it has a hump in the middle which makes sticking anything on it very difficult.

I've now repainted my bases grey stone rather than the sandstone you see here, but way back when I messaged Base-X-of-War and asked them how they achieved that colour.

Sadly, I no longer have the e-mail, but off the top of my head I beleive it started with a base of Snakebite Leather, followed by two drybrushes, the second of which was Skull White.

Not sure which colours these would map to today.

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it!

I emailed the guy before and he said he had forgotten exactly but it included some goblin green and bone drybrushing.

Why did you decide to paint them a grey stone colour?

Aesthetic decisions. Originally, I had grey-skinned Lizards, which wouldn't have stood out very well on grey bases. So the sandstone effect was fine. However, I wasn't ever really happy with the scheme; and stonework looked so good on The Bearded One's lizards that I wanted to emulate that.

His stuff looks awesome, I especially like the stone effect on the steg and slaan.

Making my decision difficult. I guess the stone effect would work better as I have reasonably bright looking lizards. I might just try and see how the sandstone look goes first.

If it helps any, I've found the grey much easier. Undercoat black, dry brush grey, drybrush white, apply black wash

Well I did a couple quick examples and I don't think I'm closer to figuring out what I was really. Here are the examples:



I don't know if I did the stone justice. Yet my girlfriend prefers the stone colour as you can see the details better. What do you think?

For the stone I sprayed black, eshin grey dry brush, eshin/white mix dry brush, white drybrush, black wash.

Sandstoneyish, based in army painter leather brown, drybrushed with bleached bone and terminatus stone and a little green which you can't really see. Then I did a wash of devil and did a little more dry brushing as it looked quite dark. Kind of wish I took a photo before the extra dry brushing.

So, this is what I've come up with. I went away from the sandstone and more towards a stone effect. I hated what I did with the paints I had to hard to went out and bought some new colours. Here's the result. (Note any grass stuff isn't there on purpose and is off now).



What do you think?

For what it's worth, I agree with your girlfriend. I think the Skink will stand out better against the stone background.
