...Are they really needed? Money's tight but not tight enough that it's a huge deal. What do you guys recommend?

It sure gets to be a pain moving big groups of loose skirmishers around, no doubt about it. But, set them on a tray and you can hinder one of their best abilities, namely spreading out in whatever formation you like to redirect charges, sneak through obstacles, block line of sight, etc. It's up to you, but I keep them off the tray myself.

I mean should I even bother getting them for when they charge and have to rank up?

It's not worth it if you ask me. Our skirmishers don't last long in combat anyway, so you'll be taking them off the tray faster than you put them on in most cases. Save the money you would spend on the trays and put it toward more models, I think.

Nah I wouldn't bother. You can still spread them out on a movement tray of course so it does make it easier, but unless you have a LOT of skirmishers you might as well just move them individually. And when they have to rank up in combat, well they aren't moving anywhere ranked like that are they? So why bother with a movement tray?
