8th Ed. Multiple Wounds problem

Looking at the BRB (page 45) and according to some forums online, the multiple wounds (d3 or d6) dont apply on single wound models, such as most infantry.
Does this mean that a stegadon with sharpened horns charging at a unit of orcs, for example, can only ever kill d6 + 1 models, which is 4-5 on average (even if i roll a spectacular 5-6 for every wound caused, making it actually 12-15 wounds in total)? If so, then the multiple wounds rule is only ever useful on multi-wound models such as ogres, trolls, etc. and i dont understand people killing 10+ models with a single stegadon charge.

That's correct. multi wounds only apply to models with more than one wound. D6+1 S6 impact hits, 3-4 S6 attacks, crew attacks, D6 S6 thunderstomps. It's not that hard to get 8-10+ wounds with some decent rolls.

Yup, that is correct. Multiple wounds only wounds up to the maximum wound stat of the model hit. It is still always worth getting sharpened horns: you will get a ton of hits no matter what you charge. If you charge a monster, you have multiple wounds. If you charge an infantry block, you get thunderstomp. It keeps your options open when determining targets.

but while were on the subject, when does the multiple wounds rule actually come into play? does a single attack need to pass the opponents weapon skill, toughness, armor save, and ward save before rolling for the multi-wounds? or does it happen in some mid-step, for example, once youve scored a hit and before rolling against toughness?

Yup, that is correct. Multiple wounds only wounds up to the maximum wound stat of the model hit. It is still always worth getting sharpened horns: you will get a ton of hits no matter what you charge. If you charge a monster, you have multiple wounds. If you charge an infantry block, you get thunderstomp. It keeps your options open when determining targets.

but thats a nice point, theyre still worth taking, just arent the infantry massacring tool i had envisioned them to be

You could just look for a unit with a character that you can smack and hope he fails some look out sir rolls.

The multiple wounds gets rolled for each unsaved wound. Let's say you charge an unkillable WoC BSB, and are lucky enough to have him roll a single 2. You now roll your d3 multiple wounds, and roll a 3. Congrats, you just did 3 wounds to him, with no further saves allowed.

Lets say i charge a unit of trolls of which one troll allready sustained 2 wounds earlier (so 1 left).

Lets assume i cause 1 unsaved wound that gets multiplied to 2.
1. Does the wounded troll get removed and i lose my second wound
2. Does the wounded troll gets removed and the second wound caries over to the next one?
3. Do you randomly determine which troll gets hit and that one suffers two wounds (or 1 if you hit the allready wounded one)

And how would it work with the piranha blade.
Would wounds carry over to the next troll or do you roll for unsaved wound seperately and lose wounds if you happen to cause more than a troll has left?

The key here is that when you attack rank and file troops, you are attacking the UNIT, not individual models. Multiple wounds is limited by the max number of wounds on the profile, not by how many wounds are on one of the models.

As an example, let's say your piranha blade hits a unit of ogres three times and deal 2 wounds with each hit. You just dealt 6 wounds to the unit and thus killed two ogres.

As a further example, let's say you had a cannon and shot that same group of ogres. You hit two ogres, and deal four wounds with each hit. You have just dealt six total wounds to the unit, because you can only do a max of three wounds to an ogre in any one hit.
