Interesting... great advice, thanks! So the Saurus with spears are better than Saurus with hand weapon despite the +1 armour save in close combat? I thought they would be better prepared to, perhaps, hold a tough unit until the stegadon/ cold one riders would get a flank charge... Thought?
How about the Scar Vet... if he's holding a Great Weapon, I understand he must relinquish his shield, is that correct?
Is this so you can try to use the unit as either spears or HWs, or did you think they could have different equipment in the same unit?
This is against the rules (though he may have meant something else). Each single unit must be armed with spears and shields OR just hand weapons and shields. The rule he may be thinking of is the one that refers to SHOWING equipment (in this case, spears) on the actual models in order to prove that you have paid the points for them. (Its over half the models in the unit). ---The saurus still have hand weapons and shields when they have spears. Having spears gives the OPTION of using them. In other words, you can choose, armor save or lots more attacks. Saurus with spears are one of the best, if not the best infantry unit in the game. Don't take them without spears mate. Please note that in almost all cases, having your entire second rank able to attack twice with strength four attacks is just better than getting +1 armor save, both for combat resolution [and correspondingly winning the combat, and/or holding the enemy up] and for killing the opponents troops. Additional - this is why you wanna rank them 6x3...they get 12 attacks from the second rank alone. This is what you want, in all simplicity in your army list. Somewhere. Yes. However... IF he charges, and kills the guy in combat (with his badass 4 str7 attacks), they cant attack back so you don't need the armor save. If you give him a shield and as well as a great weapon, then you can CHOOSE to use hand weapon (stil has one) and shield INSTEAD of great weapon. You do not LOSE the shield, you just can't use it at the same time as using your great weapon. Its either/or. Hope that clears it up a little. Please note, rules wise, you can't use mundane weapons (like a hand weapon for the hw/shield bonus) if you have a magic weapon. You gotta use the magic weapon. (Brettonians do however break this rule as they can use mundane lances on the turn they charge). For example, if you somehow (even though one doesn't exist) gave the scar vet a magical great weapon, you wouldn't be able to use the hand weapon. [Venom of the Firefly Frog is cool because it works on both]. Just in case my post made you wonder. Good luck making your army!
Guys, please adhere to the forum rules. Posting the individual points cost of each upgrade is not allowed. You may, however, give the cost of the unit after upgrades. For example: Saurus Oldblood Revered Blade Glyph Necklace Cold One light armour shield 286 That's just a random example, but you can see how it is done.
