i thoguht that this would probally belong in this section so im thinking of starting up with: 2 boxes of skins 1 box of sauraus warriors 1 scar vet 1 skink priest im thinking of going for this because the battlaion just seem like such a rip with some pretty useless units in it. so do you think this would be a good move ? also how do you sugest i use the models ? should i use the skinks as skirmishers ? if so what size units should i use, bearing in mind i'll have 44 skinks and how to tool up my heros ? THANKS !
Hello and welcome to L-O! The Battalion Box is a pretty useful way to get a new LM army up and running, though it can depend on your play style - meaning there are some who don't use the CoC and there are just as many who do ( I do). From what I gather in your post, CoC isn't in your play style. .and that's fine. As with most beginning lists, it's a matter of getting a good core bult supported with a hero or two - which you've got. Skinks are very useful and depending on how you think you'll run them will depend on how many you may wish to get. There are some here on the forums who like to run Skink hordes. If this is the case, then 2 boxes of them is needed. If you are more of a skirmish style of playing, then imo, you may want to consider getting one box of skinks and picking up another box of saurus. With 2 attacks and good armour (esp if you add sheilds) they are one of the top core choices in the game. Adding a Scar Vet to the saurus block will definately beef them up and help you against challenges. One of my favorite weapons to give a scar vet is Burning Blade of Chotec - giving the target a -2 penalty to armour saves in addition to any strength mods... and it's a flaming attack to boot! That gives you 30 points left to spend which would depend on what you're up against. The skink priest is stuck with Lore of Heavens and has a 50 pt. magic spending limit as well. Spending an additional 35 points on making him level 2 would be helpful. If your opponent is strong in magic, one of the first things I take is a dispel scroll. Some will probably suggest taking Cupped Hands for a faster way of getting rid of opponents sorceror, though it's a 1x use (and that may be all you'll need to!) and a 45 point item to boot. In a recent game, a skink priest used cupped hands on my Orc Shaman and the results ended up killing him.. so yeah, cupped hands can be pretty devestating to your opponent. Though this would leave you with 5 points left to spend on magic. Anyways, hope this helps some! The magical items you can take on hero's etc. should reflect your best chance depending on what army your playing against. Is there specific armies you will be more than likely playing against, or are you planning on building an all-comers army?
cheers mate that was alot of help, yeah i have had a little look around now and 48 skinks seems abit overkill considering i only want them as a skirmising unit/units. and yes i will be aiming to go for a all comers list so will probally go for: 2 saurus boxes 1 skinks box and the two heros so that should be a good enough start then i take it ? and then later on down the line add some salamanders in or something
against dwarves camos are one of the best units i have with i just converted from the battalion box set. They have managed to kill his artillary evey time I've taken them. I ran my lizard list for the first few games without a slann just to see how it went with skink priest, and as must as i love my skink priests (especially when i get ice shard bizard off on dwarf rangers with cross bows, haha hitting on 5's or 6's) a slann is just awsome, even in 1500 point games he dominates. My fav configeration for him is BSB, becalming cognition, focus mystery, focused rumination and cupped hands if i have the points. Against dwarves or lower magic armies i tend to drop cupped hands, and against dwarves and empire it's not a bad idea to look at the plaque of protection (2+ ward against ranged attacks means no cannon snipping). I do like CoC but they are a bit overpriced for what they are and for what other units you could field instead. The other unit that has been consistently effective against most opponents (especially dwarves) are salamanders. S3 isn't great but -3 to armour is awsome and an instant panic test is handy and has helped me take a flank a few times. Dont worry if you spend a couple ot turns getting them into possition cause when they unleash it pays off. I usually run them as 2 units of 2 with extra handlers and dont forget that any model base that the flame templet is touching is hit even if it is only a millimetre. Saurus are a great core unit but try not to run them at too small a number, usually not smaller than 20 (i like about 25 to a unit) and I'm just not sold on spears, for the extra maybe 5 attacks i'd rather the parry save and the points save. Have fun trying different configurations and hope this helps
