Hey everybody, I have posted on here before and have begun collecting models and painting up some Lizards. I am beginning to have way too many models for someone that has only played about 3 games......ever. I will break it down for you all sometime more accurately but right now I have. Slann 2 priests 30 blowpipe skinks 50 regular skinks - some old with bow and arrow and a bunch with javelins and shields. 4 Krox 4 Terradons 30 TG probably close to 90 saurus - 60 built and in process of painting. 16 cold ones Scar Vet Scar Vet on Cold one 2 Sallys 2 Stegadons Like I said way too many models for a guy that has really never played. I know that I really like the blowpipe skinks, they really impressed me in my few games. Of course I played a not very good High Elf player and stomped him pretty well. Anyways, I have been trying to get into this game for about 5 years and have never succeeded. I keep getting pulled back into my 40k Orks and can't stop. Well I have been invited to join a friendly campaign where there will be an Empire, an Ork, Tomb King, Ogre, Vampire, Chaos, and a High Elf. The campaign looks to be interesting and I think is going to occassionally include a Storm of Magic week and several attempst at the new rules for seige battles. What do you suggest I put together as a good overall beginner list that will allow me to be competitive for my more experienced friends but not be too complicatied for a new guy? And what should I do for those Storm of Magic games and the seige games? Those seem more for the experienced gamer to me.
So sad that you don't have any chameleon skinks. What size army are you using for the campaign? There is much debate as to the size of saurus blocks you should use. I have had a lot of success with units of 24 using a frontage of 6. If you go with spears then you can get potentially 24 S4 attacks in close combat. Not much will stand up to that. If you successfully buff the unit with lore of light you can pretty much turn saurus warriors into temple guard. I would not put your saurus up against elite infantry or monsters. Use the skrox for that (see next paragraph). I'd also recommend running your krox in a unit of skinks. Using what you currently have, I would say 2 units with 2 krox and 22 or 28 skinks. Use a frontage of 6 skinks to minimize the attacks they can make on your unit. I just tried the skrox unit out last night, and I must say I am a big fan of it. They have a lot of special rules that make them preferred for taking out monsters or elite infantry. Use your salamanders to torch the big hordes you might face. I try to keep them on the flank as anti-cavalry guys as well. Use your skirmishers to hunt down warmachines or set up enemy units for flank attacks from your saurus or skrox. Try not to have more than 10 in a unit. That way if you lose them it was only a handful of points.
Good stuff, thanks for the quick reply. I guess that I should make it clear on the blow pipe skinks. I think that those are chameleons. I molded some chameleon style eyes on them with green stuff and was going to also some other trinkets on them to make them more like the pictures. I just couldn't justify paying the extra dough for the actual models when regular skinks are so abundant and cheap in comparison. So I was using my blowpipes to infiltrate and take out enemy cannon, warmachines and the like. I was also very impressed when in one round of shooting they took out a High Elf Dragon.....now the guy riding it turned out to be a match for about everything else I threw at him but his mount was toast! Oh to your question. I believe that we are shooting for 2500 and 3000 point games.
Here is what I came up with for the campaign. We were told to bring a 1500 point and a 3000 point list. This is from what I have built so far. Slann -Becalming / Focus of Mystery / Rumination / Higher State -Cupped Hands / Banner of Discipline Lore of Light Skink Priest + Dispel Scroll -Harmonic Convergence Scar Vet -light armor + GW Scar Vet -Light armor + GW 30 Saurus with Spears, FC + Champion 30 Saurus FC + Champion 10 skink skirmish w/ blowpipes 10 skink skirmish w/ blowpipes 26 Temple Guard, FC + banner of swift 6 Chameleons 6 chameleons 6 Chameleons Skink Krox unit 18 w/ 2 krox +FC Steg Steg The blue parts are what I will have in 1500 pts, minus the champions and the banner of discipline. Comments desired. Plus if you suggest that I take Lore of Life instead please give in depth reasoning as I have only ever used light in the 3 games I have played.....so I felt kind of familiar with that at least.
From reading your battle report it looks like your list did pretty well, spare the self inflicted casualties. Personally, I like burninating the enemy. If it were my army I would have worked the salamanders into it somehow, maybe by cutting back on a stegadon. Probably a bit late for that change though if the campaign has already started.
Actually, we are asked to keep the same 1500 points all of the time but can vary the second 1500 points week to week. So as soon as I model a few Sallys they will be making the list for sure. They seem to be quite good. I have a few old cold one models that I think I will turn into sallys. Plus I found an amazing Lizzy army on Warseer and that guy modeled a few Snakes out of greenstuff and modelled them up to be like fire breathing winged serpents very similiar to Mayan or Aztec imagery. They are awesome and maybe something that I could loot as an idea. I also believe that I should be going with Lore of Life instead of light. I am not quite sure about the magic phase yet and I think that I may be better at a defensive strategy for now rather than knowing exactly when to buff my troops with light.
