Well I'm changing this thread a bit. I'll keep track of building my army for an escalation league I'm playiing. It is three months starting at 500 up to 1500, but I started a month late, so I am building/painting 1000 for month 2 and adding 500 more in month 3.

This is the paint scheme I intend to follow for all Sauras types, obviously the Oldblood has more gold plating and what not

Skin: royal blue wash over white primer.
    armor plates: bronze/gold
teeth, spikes, scales: Dark grey-light grey
    Shield: purple scales
    tongue, eyes: orange
    gems: purple or orange accents
base: sandstone? dark grey blasted landscape?

Here is my Oldblood so far, I have yet to get the details such as eyes and accent colors on the glyph plates.
Biggest question I have is, how should I do the base? I'm thinking a sandstone color, but I have no idea how to do that. help and constructive criticism welcome!

eh, noob here, not sure how to add pics, some error came up when I tried, so i'll leave this link here instead.

ah, I tried the Img button and it didn't work. I didn't see the pic button. Thanks for the help.

So onto the base, what should I do for him and for all my lizardmen to best match this paint scheme?

Ok, I finished painting him. I tried to do a sandstone type base.

Re: New player, test scheme? and how to base?

It's a good scheme, I think it will work.

With bases I always prefer to use at least two components, with sand and static grass being the bare minimum. In the case of your Oldblood you already have some stone on the base. If you keep the sandstone colour for that you could add sand and paint the rest of the base dark brown with a drybrush over it and then put on a few patches of static grass.

Since you want to keep the same basing on the whole army I would suggest that you start with sand and bits of stone before you undercoat the models, and then paint the sand as dirt (dark + light brown drybrush) and sandstone on the stones. Then finish off with a bit of static grass after the model is painted. You can see examples in my Lizzie blog (link in my sig) except my bits of stone are grey and I also use clump foliage.

How many coats of wash did you use? It looks really cool :)

Re: New player, test scheme? and how to base?

Thanks for the compliments and the tips on the base.

I used only one wash with P3 blue ink over a white basecoat. Then I did touch-ups with a normal GW blue layer (can't remember wich one).

I know only one wash seems wrong, but the P3 ink is a lot different from a GW shade or wash. I planned on having to do multiple washes, but I probably put it on too heavy. But it turned out great so I left it that way.

Re: New player, test scheme? and how to base?

I've made a lot of progress on my army. So far I've got the battleforce (minus thet TG) and a box of skinks put together and primary colors painted in one week. I still have a lot of details and cleaning up to do on these guys.
I also get to pick up the rest of my 1500 pt army this Saturday!

So here are my Lizardmen as they stand now. Still undecided on how to do the bases.

Re: New player, test scheme? and how to base?

Thanks for the compliments. I'll make sure to keep ya'll updated on this project.

I have figured out how to base my army. It is a simple process I'm sure many others have done, but it is quick and when it is all done it looks pretty good.
    Texture: Lustrian undergrowth
    Dry: Underhive ash
and then I just paint the edge a dark brown (I don't recall the name)

Progress is much slower during the weekdays because of fulltime job. but I've been painting the details to the saurus one by one. I've got almost half of the squad completely finished.
I'm saving the saurus standard bearer till last because I have no idea what colors to throw on the banner. same as the shield, purple maybe? shout out some ideas if you have any.
I'll put the pics of the saurus block when I finish them.

That simple basing is exactly the same that I have been thinking of going with. I also bought some static grass to add here and there, just to liven things up.

For the shield colours, here are pictures of my experiments. Maybe you can get inspiration.

Purple here is probably the worst example, with the uncomfortably placed placate, spot pattern attempts and not so great high lighting.

Oh, I've got the shield color figured out. Saurus shields will all be purple. Skink shields will all be the same green as the cold ones.
My question was what colors should I use for the Saurus banner? should I paint it purple to match the shields?

OK, 20 Saurus warriors + Scar-Vet done. (the banner needs more, but I'll wait for inspiration before I paint it)
this next week, I'm taking a break from Lizardmen, I've got 10 Terminators for my Dark Angels to paint. But the week after that it is back to Lizardmen.
I've got to finish my 36ish skinks, 3 Kroxigors, and 6 Cold One Cavalry by the end of this month!

Ah, sorry, misunderstood what you meant. Great looking force and I think the purple works for you banner. Maybe you can paint the "eyes" of the banner as jewels with a striking colour that will make it pop from the pink, like bright green, yellow or orange. Good luck with the Terminators!

Ok, I had to take a big break from these guys. but I'm back.
Last week was Throne of Skulls in Memphis. I finished my Dark Angels just in time for that. This weekend I'm running a big Mega-battle for 40k at my local store that I had to make/paint terrain for. But after this week I intend to get back to painting my Lizards. For the League I need to have 1500 pts painted by the end of this month. So expect some updates soon.

So ideas on how to paint my Slann: Purple skin, light grey belly, and a sandstone pallinquin? thoughts?

I've also made some big changes in my list. Less skinks to paint, more Saurus. I'll get salamanders eventually but they are expensive, and only special order, so I've got to wait a while.

Slann: Becalming, Rumination, Higher State of Concienceness
Scar-Vet: LA, Shield, Sword of Striking, Crown of Command
Skink Priest: Staff of lost sun, Scepter of Stability (or channeling staff?)
    Skink Priest: Dispell scroll
    Skink Skirmishers x10
    Skink Skirmishers x10
Saurus Warriors x31 full command (probably horder formation)
Cold One Cavalry: x6, Musician, Standard with Huanchi's Blessing

Can't say I don't like your colour scheme for the Slann, as I have exactly the same combination. So, good choice, sir!

And yeah, Salamanders are really expensive, but you might be able to find the metal ones from eBay quite cheap if you are lucky. I have bought three Salamanders from there, all were around 50% of the original price and two were still in their blister box.

Your army looks really good so far. Wish I could paint that quickly to that standard as well. I really like the color on your skinks too.
