Summoning is the one thing Slaanesh is good at, and they thought the best way to lift up the faction was to disincentivize summoning?

eh i think it does fine as a rally boost while you wait for those points to accumulate. slaanesh's real problem is everything costs WAY to much and the GHB can still fix that

Being a solid nighthaunts player myself, that book is (at least on paper) kinda a mixed bag.
It definitely needs to be tested on the battlefield.

it has 2 solid subfactions blood and emerald. it has good heroes and at least one good hammer in bladegasts and then a bunch of nonsense. at least everything in the army can be moderately tanky

No I don't mean for the crossboos specifically I mean Nighthaunt in general, some of their allegiance ability stuff is pretty great and helps a lot of their warscrolls, hoping the same for Sylvaneth to make the new units more worthwhile taking.

Yeah in this case having new Skaven models with more options to horde the army out or maybe points drops would help I guess

when I'm talking about mixed bag i'm thinking to things as:
the whole army now autowounds on 6s to hit... BUT hosts and wraiths losed the MWs on 6s (and no more screaming banshees)
the whole army is a big debuffer (maluses to hit, to wound, to number of attacks, to damage)... BUT the raising potential has been severely weakened.

it need to be tested, to see if it stands.

All in all, it seems to be that is a balanced battletome (apart from some units kinda meh), with some clearly superior options but nothing broken.

It's been interesting to see how so many tomes now have been mixed bags rather than wholesale buffs (though I must admit that, while I like my Skaven, I'm pissed that they as a race of treacherous backstabbers have a more effective bodyguard rule than Fyreslayers, whose equivalent only works for Runefathers and Runesons even though the Zharrgrim Priesthood is equally revered :().

I'd like to think it might be GW trying to tone down the performance of all armies to make the game more balanced, but there are many more 3rd Edition tomes to go yet before we know for certain...

The new army box properly revealed, which looks ridiculously unbalanced.

At least the fyreslayers can protect 2 heroes. Temple guard who were the first to get this rule are still stuck with only 1.

Screaming Bell Warscroll. Looks like a pretty solid buff while keeping a little bit of the randomness Skaven are known for. Also, you have to be sure to only target it if you think you can kill it, or you risk giving your opponent a free Verminlord summon.

Particularly biased toward the Sylvaneth in both the background and the model loadout, but then as others have said they are apparently Elves so that probably explains it.

True, but lorewise the Temple Guard have always been about protecting the Slann, and mainly the Slann, anyway, and that hasn't changed since Fantasy. Their innate biological programming is specifically to protect the Slann, and there is nothing about them having the same urge to protect Saurus heroes. Fyreslayers on the other hand revere the Zharrgrim Priesthood just as much as the royal line of their Lodge, which means it makes no sense for them to be able to protect one and not the other.

I mean, these boxes are never balanced. I think the SCE v.s. Khorne box also had like a 200 point difference for example. But I don't think we've ever seen it quite this bad. It's rather ridiculous.

They also will blindly follow any and all orders a Slann gives. So really all that's needed is for a Slann to say "guard this particular skink/saurus/human/whatever" and they'll do exactly that. It's not exactly something that's impossible to explain. Hell, we've get the a few lines of fluff in our tomes where a Slann gave temple guard an order to guard something and then promptly died resulting in the temple guard being stuck guarding the object/place/etc. for literal eons cuz they never recieved a new order.

Mostly it's just annoying from a mechanical point of view though. As it stands saurus guard are a glorified Slann upgrade instead of a fullfledged unit of it's own. Plus, it just looks kinda stupid to get it as a new shiny rule and then constantly see better versions of the rule :p

As an aside, in the app the fyreslayer's warscroll says it works for any hero not on a magmadroth, so aren't the priests included as well then?

    That's interesting...

Because in all the reviews of the Battletome I read it was just an ability on the foot Runefather and Runeson's Warscrolls that allowed them to choose a unit of Hearthguard or Hearthguard Berzerkers as their Retinue and the Retinue would have that bodyguard ability. At the time I thought it was daft that only those two heroes got that ability and it should have been the third allegiance ability, applying to all heroes, rather than the Grimwrath Oaths which should have been kept on their Warscroll as it just applies to Grimwraths. Perhaps GW have errata'd this now and fixed it to apply to all heroes as it should do? In which case that is excellent news!

I'm not sure about it, but probably in this case the "balance" was merely based on the sum of the costs of the single boxes for each unit

It's always been 100 to 200-ish points differnence. Blightwar was I think 150-ish points at the time. Soul wars was around a 120 I think. And dominion was nearly 300, which I guess was the most unbalance one up till this one.

And that's ignoring issues like one side having a lot of ranged firepower while the other side only has relativly slow melee units, making things even more unbalanced. :p

Usually GW "fixes" it in the scenarios by just giving one side special rules (e.g. the khorne box contains a campaign where the wounds SCE units suffer carry over to the next scenario).

I was getting excited for a minute, but then I noticed that just Hearthguard seem to benefit from this ability, which implies that the app is still using the 2nd Edition warscrolls. In Third Edition that ability was pinched from the Hearthguard and it seems to my chagrin that GW haven't errata'd the mistake they made of just giving it to Runefathers and Runesons after all.

    I
    strange, it’s pretty fresh.
As for seraphon chance, compare it to the Saurus Oldblood Celestite Spear and the Spear on the Skink on Lord Kroak’s base - fairly similar :)
