    Hello Everyone

Ive taken the big step from 40k into Fantasy now the new 8th ed rule book has been released and looking to start a 1000pt list to start off.

Army lists in 40k come easy to me but am having some difficulty in coming up with a deccent 1000pt list so far.

As im a complete noob to fantasy im looking to avoid magic for a while whilst i learn the basics so infantry will be the main core.

Does anyone have a suggestions/ basic 1000pt list i could use to start off please.

I dont fancy buying the battlion box as im planning to run no cavarly.

    Thanks

    Dai

Since you can't fit a Slann in an 1000 pts army, going with no magic isn't a gimp at all in my opinion.

Something to consider is that Goblin / Skaven or simular armies with cheap infantry are pretty good at low pts, atleast that's my personal experience. - Taking 2 salamanders should be a pretty good way of countering this.

As for me, Chameleons are a must-have in every game i play. i'd try and fit atleast 6 of them, if not 2 x 6. - They're terific war-machine hunters. Plus, at this pts bracket, you might find a mage or a soft CC hero alone or with too few Rank and File for a Lo,S to hunt, with these guys.

Saurus should be your block unit at this seize, since you won't face many AS 1+ Cav, Str 4 should be enough. Though Taking a Srox unit of skinks + 2 Kroxies is worth some consideration if you find yourself facing a knight spamming Chaos player often :). As far as Saurus goes, i wouldn't want to run below 20 (5x4).

As for characters, i'd want to try fit in a mean Oldblood with armor of destiny + a GW + whatever you feel like. with this guy spamming 5 str 7 attacks each round of CC, i think the Saurus should be enough for cores. - Giving him a coldone is deffinately an option, but if you do so Take caution to thos cannons/boltthrowers.

So.. i guess my list would look something like:

Oldblood /w Armor of Destiny + GW
    Saurus warrs x 20 + banner
    Saurus warrs x 20 + banner
    Chamo skinks x 6
    Chamo skinks x 6
    Sallie
    Sallie

    - This list still has 45 points left to spend, imo they would be spend on more gear for the OB, and some music for the blocks. but other things could deffinately be made work.

Sorry for the longs post, but wanted to spell everything out for you, since, as you said yourself, you're a noob ;)

i last ran the 9 attack oldblood; l2 priest with plaque of tepok; 20 saurus musician, standard, spears; 15 s.skirmishers; stegadon and 1 salamander.

played against dwarves, lost becasue stegadon got charged. i really like the stegadon so i try to use one as often as possible tough it might be a bit cheesy in some siuation. basically oldblood+saurus for close combat and skinks for ranged + some salamanders. other than that... whatever looks good to you

i go for a different aproach, i like to play x2 24 sarus warriors with a scar-vet in each one, give the scar-vet in the unit tha you plan on charging the enemy right out with a pirana blade and carnousor pendent (or the bane head to make it a character slayer). this will make him an old blood with twice the power and at lower points worth. the second vet should have the burning blade of chotec with the venom of the firefly frog, and a dragonfly of quicksilver. This will make him an armored unit slayer, as wel as to help out your scouts. now take x2 10 chamileon skinks. now try to set your sarus warriors in the center of the feild makeing your apponnet nervous about them and put units to try and take them out. now you put your chamelons and the very edge of the feild both end of the feild. now your opponet will have to either split his army into three or focus on one side the feild letting one or both of your chamelons to attack vital units, wizards, or seige weapons :clown: . i have rarly lost with this list, but also i role pretty well

    scar-vet; piranha blade, carnousaur pendent
scar vet; burning blade of chotec, venom of the firefly frog, dragonfly of quicksilver
x24 saurus warriors; spears, SB, Musican, Champion
x24 saurus warriors; spears, SB, Musican, Champion
    x10 chameleon skinks, stalker
    x10 chameleon skinks, stalker

venom is useless since it ofly affects mundane weapons. and why go for 20 chamelons with champion? they are going to do the same thing as skinks but cost allmost twice as much and the opponent won't really care about them unless he yare in teh way in wich case the will charge them to get to the saurus.
also, champions? 1 attack for 12 points (i think)? you could get another saurus for those points that has 1 extra wound aswell.
piranha blade only multiplies wounds on multi wound creaturs, so unless you fight ogres its only gonna be usefull against characters and monsters.
regarding deployment suggestions... as i said, the opponent will focus on the saurus while blasting chameleons with spells
also, dragonfly of quicksilver? are you really that worried tha tyour opponent will deploy scouts and steal your deployment for chameleons?

    Cheers for the responses everyone.

Managed to get my hands on the battilion box set this weekend at a stupidly cheap price so have based my 1000pt list around it - I know everyone dismisses coldones but ive got the models now so might aswell use them

    Heres what im thinking

    Hero’s
Saurus Scar Veteran, Coldone, Shield of Mirrored Pool, Spear =139pts
Skink Priest , Dispell Scroll =90pts
    Hero ‘s = 229pts / 22.9%

    Core
20 Saurus with spears, Musician and Standard – 258pts
    10 Skirmish Skinks & Skirmisher Brave - 76pts
    Core = 334pts / 33.4%

    Special
    X7 Cold One & Musician & Standard – 275pts
    Special Total = 275pts / 27.5%

    Rare
    x2 Salamander, x2 Extra Handlers – 160pts
    Rare Total = 160pts / 16%

    Main Total – 998pts

i have to disacgree with you. saurus need those spears to get their 20 attacks. for 1 point per moedl they are worth it. if you charge, you get to use them the next turn, if you don't, you get more attacks. i've had them win agains chaos warriors because of those extra attacks

I'm not saying spears are useless. Far from it.

Though at 20 warriors running five wide, it's only 5 attacks, and a whole 2/5 chance of a rank. and after 5 wounds taken, you'll be loosing attacks.

I'm a fan of having a unit of both HWs and Spears in my lists, though with spears you need to be pushing 24 if not 30 models. at that size you only "loose" 2/6 chance of a rank, and you gain 6 attacks. + when running 30 you can take 12 wounds before loosing attacks.

To summ up. my point is that you gain a whole lot more from spears (And sacrifize a lot less), when running 6 wide, and minimum 4 ranks deep. that's why i always go for HWs when <24 saurus.

But when that's said, it really does boil down to personal preference - weather you like your warriors as anvils or medicore hammers.
