I'm an advid 40k player of over 15 years and have dabbled in Fantasy here and there. My friends and I have finally decided to take the Fantasy plunge (mainly cuz of my incessant nagging due to the new Lizardmen ) and I feel I have a pretty good grasp on the rules. There are just a few things I'm still hazy on. 1) Look out Sir: Since casualties are always removed from the rear ranks and characters are almost always in the front rank, how/why is Look out Sir used exactly? 2) I keep hearing about "re-directors" or "re-directing units". What does this mean exactly? I hear Skinks are good for this. Does it mean a unit you place out front to be charged, then choose to Flee, forcing the enemy to re-direct the charge? 3) Shields add +1 to your Armor Save. Does this bonus not apply in Close Combat if I'm using a Two Handed Weapon or a Magical Weapon (even a one handed one?) 4) Warmachine Hunters: What makes a unit considered a good Warmachine Hunter? Simply fast movement or Flight? I'm hazy on this. Thanks in advance!
I'm in the same boat as you, just starting fantasy from 40k and I'd like to know about these as well.
What I don't understand is, if casualties are always taken from the rear ranks, how can a character ever have a wound allocated to him in the first place? If a character is killed? Does another rank and file model just move up into his spot? Kinda like bait units? Another question I forgot to ask. Attacks that do multiple wounds only do so against models with more than one wound correct? It doesn't transfer onto a unit does it? For example, if a Carnosaur inflicted 3 wounds on a unit of single wound infantry, those wounds wouldn't be multiplied by D3, but if those wounds were caused on say, a unit of Ogres, then they would be multiplied? It works like this in 40k, but I couldn't find any similar wording in the WFB rulebook so I wanted to be sure. Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.
1) Look out Sir: Since casualties are always removed from the rear ranks and characters are almost always in the front rank, how/why is Look out Sir used exactly? re: So sometimes in fantasy, certain warmachines, spells, or other shooting attacks will affect the entire unit that the character is placed in. Take a stone thrower for example that manages to hit a unit with a character in it, and the hit template manages to cover the character as well. Even though the character is technically "hit" by the template, a friendly model within the unit can attempt to take the hit for the character. In close combat or through challenges, characters can take wounds, and if it takes too many, it will die and another rank and file will move up to replace him. Remember that anyone with base contact with said character can attack the character. 4)Warmachine Hunters: What makes a unit considered a good Warmachine Hunter? Simply fast movement or Flight? I'm hazy on this. re: Sometimes lizardmen players deploy chameloen skinks, skink skirmishers or cavalry as anti-warmachine units to tie up the warmachines, but this has kinda already been answered. Anything cheap and fast that can get in and tie up the unit will work. 5) Another question I forgot to ask. It works like this in 40k, but I couldn't find any similar wording in the WFB rulebook so I wanted to be sure. re: Yes you are correct. Oldbloods on Carnosaurs are capable anti-monster units. Kroxigor with skinks work too. If I have said anything incorrect, other forum members should reply to this post with the right answers. I have been following lizardmen for 5 years now but haven't had much battle-experience. (Too busy painting figures and school stuff).
