I have recently started putting together my army that I mass purchased back in January. I have the following models. 36 Saurus 12 Skinks 16 Coldone Cavalry 22 Temple Guard Slann Mage Priest Stegadon Kroq-Gor Trying to put together a list I discovered I couldnt even use the mighty caronosaur lord unless I fielded close to 2600 points, a shame really since he is such a beautiful model. Im having trouble deciding on the best way to field my units as given. I figured I would take the stegaddon as an ancient since I have so many special choices already. Other than that I am unsure exactly how many models I should include in a unit, i.e. I could do 3 units of 12 saurus or 2 units of 18, might proxy in 4 Warlord lizard minis I have to make it an even 40. Im used to the 40k rules so this is all rather new to me. Any tips or suggestions with my given models would be most appreciated.
I would start off playing a smaller game. 1250 to 1500 points. With that you should be able to get quite abit of your collection in. Any Higher and you will have a tough time meeting the minimum core points requirement. You could start with 2 units of 18 saurus. i wouldnt bother with 3 of 12. You could also use some of the cold one cavalry as unit filler to get the saurus blocks to a bigger size. 1 of them is 2 saurus models. You could also proxy in some salamanders or razordons with cav models. You could do a big bus of 10 saurus cav. the skinks could be one unit of skirmishers or 2 units of chameleons. about the only thing you wont have much use for is the carnosaur model.
Yeah, Im glad I bought the model just because it looked cool rather than for its in game use, otherwise I would be super pissed right now. Maybe when I get used to the game I can field enough points to actually see him in battle. I'll try to post some pics of my army as Im painting them too, going with a red scale theme.
At 3500 points (maybe even 3000), you could field a slann and the carnosaur. To be honest, I have never gotten my carnosaur to be effective in combat. I do much better just taking the old blood on a cold one.
Not exactly responsive to your question, but you need to get some Skinks man! 3 units of 10 skirmishing with Javelins, at least 7 chameleons, or 2 units of 10, and consider running a cohort of Skinks and Krox, as they tend to hold streadfast better than the Saurus. This is based on my somewhat limited experience, but I think it is sound advice.
