Hello everyone, So after checking out some people playing this game and talking with my local gaming stores clerk, I have decided to give warhammer a go. IHave narrowed down my choice of army to the lizardmen. The clerk stated that getting a battallion box would be a good start. After doing some research I noticed that it does not have a migic user ( or at least I thought not). Would it be a good Idea to pick up a Skink Priest or a slann. Also any other advice/comments are welcome. Thanks, Fish
Hello and welcome! Yes the battalion box is a good start as you'll need some skinks and some saurus. The cold one cavalry will probably not get much play after you expand your army but to learn the game they are alright. I would say yes, you should pick up a slann and a skink priest. Get the priest for low level games just starting out and learning the rules. Once you have mastered that, the slann will be your go-to magic user/general on all games above 1500 pts. Once you get that down, other models to pick up include chameleon skinks (or you can convert some of your regular skinks for this if money is tight), salamanders (at least 4 of them), temple guard (to protect your slann), and a stegadon or two eventually.
For 1500 pts or less I would run a Skink priest and a saurus oldblood or scar-vet. Once you get higher than 1500 pts go for a slann and a unit of temple guard. Also salamanders and chameleon skinks are fun and effective to use, though they can be difficult to use properly for new players.
I just started playing fantasy and lizards myself, what I did was open up army builder, plug in the units that come with a battle box, then add the models that made me want the army to begin with, then figure out what I needed to make it all legal. So if I remember right, I bought a battlebox, a slann, a stegadon, and to make it all legit I bought one more box of saurus. You'll end up about 2000. Pretty sweet way to get to a 2k army imho.
