Okay so I'm picking up warhammer again after a ten year break and much of the game has changed. Not that I was any good back then either, but I could really use some pointers. As it stands, here's my list: Saurus Scar-Veteran w/ Great weapon, light armor and BSB Lvl 1 Skink priest w/ plaque of topek 18 Saurus Warriors w/ spears and full command 2x 10 skink skirmishers Stegadon w/ great bow 2x salamander w/ 1 extra handler ------------- 980 points total. Questions/concerns: this is meant to be an all-comers list. It's subject to change, except for that I have already bought 16 of the Saurus and also the skinks. *What to do with those extra 20 points? Get some gear for the BSB saurus? Add a couple of saurus or skinks? *Do I NEED chameleon skinks to deal with war machines? Will dwarfs own me, for instance? *I only have one big fighting unit, the saurus, and thus only one place to safely put characters. Should my skink priest hide behind some skirmisher skinks instead of hang out in this regiment? *My plan is to use the stegadon as a hammer. Does it work in this role? Would I better served by another block of Saurus and maybe a kroxigor or two for these 235 pts? *Anything else?
okay, I've tried this list five or six times now, all the games against empire except one (High Elves). So far it's undefeated! I have some moderate problems with enemy magic and cannons really threaten my stegadon, but otherwise im fairly confident. Are there still no comments to make?
Magic wise are you looking to just delay? If so I suggest perhaps a dispel scroll if you can get it in there to guarantee a stop on something not cast with irresistible. I would split the Sallys if possible, but that is all just personal preference. If you can get the Saurus up to 20, that would be nice, but after any minor tweaks not sure how many points you would have to spend. If it is working so far, keep going with it. But Chameleon skinks work well in dealing with war machines, but Dwarves are some tough cookies. Poison is your friend!
I would've thought 2 salamanders was 1 too many at 1000 pts. Personally, I would swap 1 out for a unit of 6 chameleons, and go cannon hunting (especially when taking a stegadon against dwarves/empire. eek)
Thanks for your comments guys. I actually have been running a dispel scroll with the force every game, and it's been very useful. I like the two salamanders, because they soak a fair bit of shooting and magic before dying and still always get some nice shots off. I've had two losses versus deamons, but one turned out to be based on a rule missunderstanding (he had 4+ regen and a 5+ ward save on plaguebearers, and they beat my stegadon and saurus simultaneously...). The other game he did this MSU thing with flamers, horrors and furies. Very annoying, kept out of my charge arc with the saurus and I was tricked into deploying my stegadon at the wrong end of the deployment zone so I couldn't get into combat. Though it couldve been close if he hadn't passed every ward save on his general/mage.
Looks very nice. You could use the remaining 20 points on a Dragonhelm and the Venom of the Firefly Frog for your BSB. I would run the Priest around in the skirmishing groups yes. I think the Stegadon route is a good, thunderstomp + impact hits will mess up infantry at 1000 points. Then again so will 2 Salamanders.
