Okay, first off: sorry this is a total noob question!
(I'm still trying to get a feel for the dynamics of this army)

    My Question:

I'm pretty dead-set on fielding Terradons in my army, that said... I have no idea how effective they are on the table... are there must-have units I should field to balance out an army list with Terradons in it?

Well first of all, this part of the board is purely for posting army lists so I will move the thread to tactics. ;)

Terradons are indeed a very good option, I'd almost say they are essential to most armies with the ability to fly behind enemy units and harrass. They aren't quite as good now since march blocking isn't as effective, but still worth taking, and drop rocks is always a nice bonus.

Ooops! Sorry, I thought maybe since I was working on my list... and it was related to unit selection that I was in the right spot? (my bad). Tactics makes more sense.

Back to Terradons: Tiktaq'To seems kinda expensive, if I'm already fielding terradons... does he add enough juice to make him worth the points?

    I love my terradons
Or at least I did in the last edition.

Honestly, they are good but not really good. Skirmishers in general took a big hit with not being able to march block or having 360 line of sight. I still think the drop rocks ability is sweet as well as their javelins getting the occasional kill but other than that they are not so great.

I hate to rain on your parade but I wouldnt run an all terradon army. Definitely include some! They are awesome supporting units for getting rid of fast cav and war machines.

But if you want to run the whole army with terradons, go ahead! :D :D Tick tack to is a good general for that kind of army. With his ability to come in from any table edge, you could definitely get the edge on some units

I hadn't even considered an ALL Terradon list.... but no, as long as I have a few of those models in there I'm content. I don't need an all Terradon army, but; is there an ideal number? Would 2 squads of 3 work? As a "good but not really good" type of unit, do they need something specific on the ground to back them up?

I'm afraid the new terrain rules in 8th may be rough on the Terradons. I don't know all the new rules, but from what I understand, True Line of Sight does away with the rule that you can only see 2" into a forest. If so, then forests aren't the safehavens for Terradons that they used to be. In 7th, I liked to fly Terradons into a forest near the center of the board on turn 1 and then fly behind the enemy lines on turn 2, dropping rocks and throwing javelins on the way. With True LOS, you will be vulnerable to shooting while in the forest. But on the other hand, you will be able to charge out of the forest on turn 2 since you can see out just as easily as the enemy can see in.

Terradons should still be useful, but I'm going to have to learn a new way to play them. It may be as simple as presenting the enemy a more tempting target for shooting than the relatively fragile flyers.
