hi again peeps, ok so like i said in my previous post im new here and in fantasy in general. i just fineshed building the new battalion (first and only lizardmen i own); and before i start buying more models with my christmas & birthday money i would like to decide who will lead my army when it's larger : an old blood on a carnosaur or a slann? personally i prefer hand-2-hand combat rather than fancy magic/spells. i love the carnosaur & rider model; and i know to stay away from kroq-gar and kroak as im a noob. i am aware that my mind seems already decided on getting the old blood, but everyone seems to take the slann, and as i don't know the rules maybe that's the way better choice. help please i apologise for the "esay" written above, but i'm really confused
Warhammer Fantasy has several different phases to each turn. Generals that consistently win tend to be competitive in each phase, being dominant in one phase will allow them to win against a specific list or general but against a wide variety of opponents. Why am I talking about this in a thread about slann v oldblood? The slann tends to help in every phase (even if only with magic buffs which perhaps should be limited to discussion on magic phase) where the oldblood really only helps with combat. Movement: The oldblood moves relatively fast but limits the tactical movement of the rest of your army as it has to be protected from range attacks so it doesn't die before contact. The slann theough slow and relatively unmanouverable in a TG block actually helps the movementof the rest of your army by being an incredibly stable anvil unit, can be surprisingly nippy in charges with the right banners and there are movement spell buffs and hexes to further improve the phase. Shooting: The old blood is a liability that needs to be protected, the slann in a TG block generally makes a cost ineffective target, i.e. you often prefer people to shoot at the TG bock rather than other units. Combat: The oldblood carnie is great while in combat but it doesn't have the static CR of a TG block with slann BSB nor the survivability of the TG block, especially after magic buffs. Magic: Enough said above but the oldblood also needs to have additional help in the magic phase to avoid being dominated totally in this phase. Command/control/morale: The oldblood loses on this one too, it tends to operate at the edge of the army while the slann is in the middle. The slann also is better because it can be the bsb too, making the good things about the lizardmen command even better. To conclude, the oldblood on a carnie can be fun in a bashy way while it survives, the slann in a TG block makes your your whole army better in virtually every phase. And really finally this time, I would advise getting the proper slann model now, for most battles, and a toy dinosaur raptor to proxy for the oldblood for fun games (mine has an old 5th edition plastic saurus).
ok thanks, now i can see why everyone go's with the slann. i guess it would be easier for me to build an army with the slann as a lord cause he's alot cheaper than the carnosaur (in real money not points) and because i already have some temple gaurd which came with the battalion. do you think there's anyway i could include a carnosaur in an army of around 2000 - 2500pts with a slann in it? and if so would the carni still be a liability? it would be a shame to scrap the carnosaur idea thanks for the advise beegfrog
