I am still getting used to playing the army, and I want to add models to it, not sure if I should go with a stegadon or a couple of salamanders. Here is what I have: 20 Temple Guard 1 Slann Mage priest 65 Saurus HW+S 1 Skink priest 1 Skink Chief 80 (or so) skinks 16 Saurus Calvary 1 oldblood/scar vet 2 Kroxigors (with the skinks for a skrox unit) Advice?
I would go with the salamanders first, then pick up the stegadon later. You will get the most use from the salamanders hands down.
depends on your army list and play style to be honest, im not one for saying buy this uber greatness of doom, but how do you play with your army, what do you feel is missing from your list, what doyou struggle killing etc. Salamanders are good for thinning down enemy units and are not to bad for holding the flanks either, A stegadon- could be put together as an EOTG for your Priet, or as an ancient or baby, depending on what you feel ( if not being used as a EOTG i would recomend an ancient steg, the extra strength impact hits and the blowpipes seem more effective) so you could use your steg for extra magical support, and/or impact damage or even as a cannon magnet to provide your army some relif
I usually use my plastic steg as EOTG or a skink chief with warspear. I have it moded so that I can switch it out for either of those uses. I could also use it as an ancient stegadon with just a little further modification.
I have been using my warriors to assault, and skinks or chams to harrass. I go right at the enemy, and support with the Slaan using Life. If I play at 275 (Slaan) I use him to support. At any rate, i am looking at something to help support, eliminate artillery. Looking for something to do some damage. I was thinking of Sallies but the steg hits hard. The other thing though is points. The sallies are way cheaper...
With sallies, even when they perform poorly, they are still good. Even when you face armies that do not panic (VC,TK, or Daemons), the sallies are well worth their cost.
A few weeks ago I had a Salamander eat all his handlers then decide to stay and guard the bodies of the dead skinks, which were in his stomach... My VC friend just ignored it for the rest of the game. That was the only time my I've ever had a Salamander perform poorly. They are totally worth every point in this edition. Move 12", shoot up to 18" == threatening most bunkered down units like Dwarves and Cannons. A pack of them is unlikely to get killed by cannon fire in one round as well.
You think thats funny? I had four sallys up against Warriors of Chaos a couple of months ago. In the first 2 turns 3/4 rolled misfires and ate their handlers. One unit failed their MR roll and sat around. The unit that passed got charged by a chariot and died. ... I still bring at least 2 Salamanders in every game.
I have one for you. I was playing against an empire army. My opponent sent a unit of 10 outriders(hand gunners maybe) after my unit of 2 sallies with extra snacks. I proceeded to run around them and burn them. My skinks all either were eaten or jumped in front a wound. I made every leadership check on the single sally that was left and just kept running around them and killing them. It was awesome.
