I know a lot of games people try to avoid using named characters and such, but after hearing about some vampire count lists... I was thinking... Oxyotl reads like he would be extremely effective against VC. Picking out a character from inside a unit, without benefit of Look Out, Sir!, and poisoned attacks on a 5+. And his point cost is basically the same as a fully kit Scar Vet on Cold One or Level 2 Skink Priest. I'm actually considering trying him out in a 1250/1500 point range, but just curious if anyone's used him much?
My general belief is that none of our special characters are really worth their points. And, even if the argument for their worth could be made, it would be a far stretch to call any of them cheesy. You should be safe. If he sounds fun to you, try him out! Keep in mind that skinks are predisposed to dying and/or running away. Dropping 160 points into the middle of such a squishy unit may not be the most prudent decision. The best you can hope for is maybe one turn of targetting (before the unit gets charged). That's 2 shots that have a 33% to wound (if no armor save). I'm guessing that the majority of the time, this guy will not make as effective an assassin as you are hoping.
I also think this guy would be worth running. I have only been playing lizardmen about 2 months. I take a unit of at least 5 chameleons every time though. I just love that doubleshot with poison. I haven't used him yet, but I will. Any time they get charged, I run anyway. Sometimes I don't rally in time to do anything, but I enjoy using them.
Ive actually run him in a few games, and he just isn't worth his point cost, especially considering the relatively short range of a blowgun, and the fact you need to be very aggressive and fast with your chameleon skinks(which is the unit i run him with). As much as being able to pick a model out from a squad can be, blowguns best use is killing monstrous mounts, and engaging lightly armored models, such as mages, so if the local game dynamic has lots of mages in squads then I'm sure you'll find much more use out of this character than someone who plays in games with mostly bricks of guys.
in my opinion, all the named lizardmen heroes are way too expensive for what they do. even high elves (considered elite and expensive) have cheaper and more efficient named heroes. also, when you consider what you can get for those points in standard units, I don't think those guys pay off. and keep in mind: 2 wounds and the hero is gone! if you still want to have a hero rather than units, try a skink chief with a blowpipe and venom of the firefly frog. that way you get BS5 and 2 poisonous shots, which you can re-roll to hit - all for 73pts. if you want him more mobile, put in a cloak of feathers or give him a terradon mount. if you are going against armored opponents, give him the Staff of the lost sun instead of the blowpipe and frog venom - no poison, but 3x S5 shooting. nice. that "pick a target in a unit" rule is not worth the additional points to get Oxyotl, I think.
would he be good to use against tomb kings?? you can just target the lynch can't you? i believe he doesn't wear any armour and his army begins to crumble.
Yea he would seem worth while against tomb kings or vamps, since their armies crumble once their characters are dead. Ps. don't forget you can put in a unit of Chamelions.
Hrrm... for against a VC army, 1250 points... Heroes: Oxyotl ScarVet on Cold One, LA, BBoC, Ench Sh Priest, Lv2, Diadem, Dispel Scroll Core: 17 Warriors, Full Command, Spears (insert Vet here) 10 Skirmishers Special: 6 Chameleon Skinks 5 Chameleon Skinks (attach Oxy here) 6 Cavalry, Standard - Plaque of Dominion Rare: Salamander w/ Extra Handler Total: 1251 points Drops the Terradons I normally like to use, but I think two units of chameleon skinks could be fun for doing some hunting.
But who says you HAVE to use him with Skinks, anyway? I would use him with a squad of Saurus, picking off enemy musicians and Standard Bearers before scurrying to the back of the squad in CC. While he has to shoot the same squad as his buddies, Saurus don't shoot at all, so no great loss.
That doesn't work.. If you kill a unit champ he is dead for good, if you kill a musician/standard bearer someone else picks it up and you basically just remove a different model. They can't die until they are the only ones left in the unit with the champ.
