Does everybody use the citadel paints? Anyone use other, less expensive brands? Who uses airbrushing? Any tips what kind of airbrush do you use ? Do you have a big compressor? I've been out of the game for a long time and I wanted to pick it up again, but I'm on a very tight budget atm and i don't want to spend too too much. Any and all thoughts would be appreciated
I use the following paints http://www.blackhat.co.uk/coat_darms/paintcolours.php And you can normally find them on sale at different retailers. Also wondering about airbrushing myself.
I use mostly Citadel paints but I've given some Vallejo paints a go and they seem pretty good - particularly for airbrushing. Only problem is I'm finding it hard to match the GW colours with any consistency. Their new base/layer/layer/wash/glaze system really is quite good (if not expensive if you want to be a purist!)
I've had a lot of success with Vallejo Game Color Paints and Game Air (air paints), for 17ml they go for about $1.75-3.00 depending on where you buy and what color etc. I think that thoroughly beats the 12ml you get for $4+ for the citadel name brand.
Seems like p3 might be the way to go ? http://arcanepaintworks.blogspot.com/2014/05/comparing-paint-lines.html
I have been using Testors Enamel metallics, I find they go on smoother in thinner coats, and have more metallic flake, but they take some shaking and you need paint thinner instead of water.
They dry up very quickly and go really goopy and while you can try to thin them back down they never really cover well again. Try to keep them well away from heat and sunlight.
Thanks for all the advice, I have got to find a hobby shop here. Nearest one I know is like an hour away
I use citadel brush paints and vallejo air for my airbrush. Honestly thinning citadel paints for airbrush use works very well so I would recommend that route if you wanna save some money.
Lol, mentioning saving money and any Citidel paint sounds like a joke. I recently purchased about half of the P3 line and I have to say that those paints are really good. They thin like a dream. It is really easy to paint with them. My only complaint with them is the flip top pot. I prefer vallejo paint dropper bottles.
http://wargameguru.weebly.com/review-miniature-paints-101.html Oh this is a nice all encompassing review.
The idea is to not buy the same color twice depending on your mode of application. Not to mention you will never get the right match. If you do go with an airbrush and don't mind having a color that is only for airbrushing, then the vallejo air is pretty handy. Mainly due to the previously mentioned dropper bottle.
Though I've used Vallejo paints (good, more in a bottle and secure tops), I prefer to stick with the Citadel paints. Whilst they're more expensive, the way the different paints are organised and work together is incredibly convenient. I find the washes to be particularly effective. For me, the benefits the Citadel range afford (especially for people relatively new to the hobby) outweigh the price difference.
I use Citadel paints and washes almost exclusively. When I first started out in 40K many years ago, the hobby store only had Citadel paints. Now they do carry Vallejo and some other paints as they have expanded beyond just selling miniatures. But I still go back to the Citadel paints. Maybe it is just a habit, but I like the colors and washes and how the match and work together.
