Hey guys, just wanted to let you know, I got a game of Age of Sigmar in and I have to say I enjoyed it. We played 30 models each, I played Lizards he had Orcs. Now bear in mind that we are both friendly players and both brought a balanced list. So it was a lot of fun, I do see the potential to abuse this game. But the way we played was lots of fun. Just thought I'd report.
Glad to hear. Hoping to set up a game with my High Elf buddy soon. Although I'm apprehensive he'll want to try that 3 dragon battalion.
That's the thing, as long as no one acts as a jerk, this game is lots of fun. Once you've had a bit more practice you'll start noticing tactics you can use how to best use your units and combos you can do with other units, and I think that's rewarding in itself.
Found the same myself. My friends and I use our local game store's house rules (either battalions or a system that uses keywords to make an impromptu force org chart), and the game seems genuinely fun. Very skirmishy, like the pick up games I used to play back when Warmachine battleboxes were the standard. Surprising depth of strategy too.
Problem is that as a power-gamer a lot of the fun goes away when you cant strife to build the strongest list. The game has more or less won me over, but the above is a major problem to me: You can never know who actually won, just who is less skilled at holding back.
I have to concur with P-P. I like the streamlined rules and the flexibility with formations. I used to like list building almost as much as playing now it's gone. I'm not crazy competitive, but I think AoS needs some sort of standardized balancing system to reach it's full potential. I don't know any other game that requires all players to restrain themselves except for friendly rough housing.
It has strategy and tactics, but does anyone else consider Seraphon being too much unbalanced? I have played like 5 games now and each game some units seems out of control. Ripperdactyles killing an Ancient treeman with mystic shield casted. 10 templeguard (in cover & hero nearby) killing 7/20 chaos warriors and no taking a wound back. Bastiladon holding a named Bloodthirster a herald of khorne in jugg and a Chimera for 3 turns. Kroxigor moon hammer melting infantries. In 8th I feel LM was a mid-low tier army. And I achieve victories thanks to my generalship. Now in AoS I feel seraphon are so silly that I can win just throwing dices.
Lizardmen has gone from average to top Tier. I must admit I absolutely love what they did. Never have lizardmen felt this much as lizardmen......even if it means we are now named after Malekiths dragon, I am all for it! I JUST THAT THAT SYSTEM SO I CAN START ENJOYING IT! Anyone tried this yet? seems pretty well made! https://sites.google.com/site/ageofsigmarsdk/
I only played with a unit of 10 temple guard, 10 skinks, a skink priest, a skink chief, a Old Blood with Great Blade, an Oldblood on a Cold One, 3 Krox, 2 Salamanders and a handler. We played 30 models each he had 22 orcs, Warboss on a Wyvern, 5 Black Orcs, 1 Shaman and a Warboss with BSB. It was a pretty balanced game in my opinion. Krox destroyed his Black Orcs. But I was rolling pretty hot. I found the Saurus heroes were on the weaker side, but the troops were hardcore.
I have a lot of different armies (actually an embarrassing amount) and I've really found that most armies seem over powered on paper now. Once on the field they seem more balanced. My lizardmen have had a big step up, but I have to say my tomb kings are now amazing, where as before they were pretty tough to win with. I also have noticed that a lot of it is just old memory, like every chaos player will run his Chaos Warriors right into my Ushabti/Krox, because that used to work. But now monstrous infantry are suitably good at killing regular infantry, so I always win. I think monstrous infantry now need to be handled by magic and artillery before they can rampage infantry. Lots of little things like that, or that my gnoblars now make a decent enough tarpit for monsters. So players will walk right into them and be stuck forever. A lot of it is adjusting to the new system and forgetting what used to be fact.
My boyfriend hates it as their is no 'proper' balancing rule. I still need to look at my other models, got some Dark Elves, Tomb Kings and other models sitting about gathering dust. Ataxa saw no action in a long while, I may have to write an AoS sheet for him.
