6th Ed. Playing with Amazons in 6th Edition

Hi all!

In our club, we’ve spent some time lately deciphering the sacred plaques and the ancient writings of the Old Ones. In doing so, we have unearthed several forgotten (and largely overlooked) rules for the Amazons that we thought might pique your interest.

These rules were penned by Andy Hoare himself, who designed the Lustria campaign from 2004, the 7th Lizardmen's Armybook and also contributed to the development of material for the 3rd-4th edition of 40,000 (Necrons, Witch Hunters, Chaos Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Dark Angels...), and while they may not be the standard for competitive tournament play, they are absolutely perfect for our upcoming narrative campaign in Lustria. We have gathered all the units and conducted a full audit of their original sources and roles to ensure they fit properly into a 6th Edition environment. We even had a testing tournament!

To keep our records in order for our incoming Summer Campaign (where the Lustrians are the antagonists), we have documented the full Amazon 6th Edition Registry & Integration Guide in the club’s archive, but we wanted to share the findings here so you can field the Sisterhood in your own games as well.

In 6th there are two "official" Amazon units:
  1. Amazon Serpent Priestess (published inWD#307-UK)
  2. Anakonda's Amazons (WD#308-UK)
Both are mercenary (Regiments of Renown) units: the first one is a powerfull character (L3 sorceress with her own Lore of the Serpent) that consumes a Hero and Rare slots.
The second one is a regiment of Amazons with a named Champion (Anakonda), equiped with a ranged weapon.

He is also known for his works in Necromunda, Bloodbowl and Adeptus Titanicus.

There're two more Amazon units, (alledgely, I could not confirm the source) also written by him:
- the Amazon Totem Warriors (Special unit).
- the Amazon Cold One Riders (Rare unit).

They were published in an article named "Additional (Non-official) Amazon rules". I think it goes against the forum rules to link these resources, so I will not do it.
But I will talk a little bit about them.

In the design notes, Andy Hoare says he wanted to extend the two Amazon units from WD 307/308 with these two new units... the first one is based on the witch elves: two weapons and Frenzy. The second one, on the Cold One Knights (also dark elves), but have the Fast Cavalry rule. Both profiles are "humanized" (less elf, more human). Both have the "Native" rule for ignoring penalties moving through the jungle.

We want to make them available as mercenaries in our campaign, so we have tested them... and so far we think they are balanced enough for a narrative event.
However, as these rules are (explicitly) not official, we do not recommend to allow them in tournaments.

Most interesting, I hadn't realised the Amazons had been given as much development as that.

Andy Hoare also wrote the 7th Edition Lizardmen army book, so he's certainly well-versed in the lore revolving around Lustria.

I've noticed the rules for the Totem Warriors and Cold One Riders on a 6th Edition rules collection... most interesting, I'll have to use these as a basis for a TOW Arcane Journal :D

At first I thought: these are some fan-made rules or homebrewing non-sense. But then I saw the author and... well, I would not dare to call Andy Hoare "a fan". While non-official, these rules are perfect for our campaign, or for a conversion project from Daughters of Khaine.

Let us know if you adapt them into TOW! I would love to see them on the battlefield!
