as the topic title says, would a skink priest be viable on a horned one? i just think it would be cool to model that since i can't see why to take a horned one instead of the cloak of feathers but i thought i'd ask you guys for the tactical advantages of a horned one
The only benefits you get from a Horned One over the Cloak of Feathers is: Cause Fear +1 Attack at S4 +2 Armor Save 2 Unit Strength You can't fly over units and terrain. You can't move as far.
he would also be able to enter a forrest to be safe from enemy shooting... but flying is still better than that i guess i'll just model one from the skink chief from teh stegadon box and the extra cold one i have.... why do they give you 8 anyway? nobody uses that many and its too little for 2 units, while 2 boxes is too much for 2 units
The 8-cavalry box was released back when you only needed a 4-model wide unit to get a rank bonus, so that if you had your eight cold ones arranged 4x2 you would have two full ranks.
that makes sense i guess... still sucks tough anyway i decided to model my priest on horned one and use him as what he is untill i get my hands on a priest with cloak model since i will never me able to make that from green stuff, and i want to get WYSIWYG for the upcoming tournament he might even do better than i expect, who knows
just don't forget that US2 doesn't get the -1 to hit against shooting for being skirmished/by-himself, so you're probably going to want to keep him with the ranked stuff. Good luck.
Yeah, the cloaked priest is kind of hard to find... he was never at any of the stores I went to so I ended up just ordering one straight from GW... I don't know of anyone besides Hellbreaker who has green-stuffed the cloak of feathers, but his is very well done --> http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/lizardmen-painting-blog.1660/
I wish they had units of skinks on cold ones. That would be really cool. I was thinking about making a unit of skink cavalry and using them in place of the standard CoC.
they had those models in 5th (i think), looked interessting. as for US 2 i don't really worry. i will probably face VC, DoC, Skaven, DE and Brettonia.... except DE none have "shooting"... and if flamers target a skink, it doesn't matter what his US is, he will be dead. and my store barely has any models, they need to order them from another store who, if they don't have them, order them from GW.... so yeah, i'll ne lucky if i get my terradons 'till february. all i have to do now is decide between 3 krox or 2 salamanders/razordons... its the same point cost (almost) but i'm hoping krox will suck (only tested them twice and both time i let them be charged)
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1300307&prodId=prod1140054 That's the only source of Skinks on Cold-Ones I can find. As for Krox/Sallies, i'd go for sallies, firstly they're less expensive, and secondly, they're causing a panic check on a unit that suffers any casualties from their shooting. Against Skaven or Orcs, killing just 1 Clanrat or Night Goblin instantly triggers a panic check. Krox need to charge to win combats. With 4+ AS (even Saurus with HW + Shield get 3+ in combat) they won't survive long anything cavalry charges etc. They have 3 wounds each, yeah, but it doesn't matter if you don't hit with half of your return attacks. Either way, the chances of being beaten through combat res after being charged is high, and then you have to test on Ld7 (which I don't get, something twice the size and twice as scary as a Saurus having less leadership...) Mind you, krox don't try and eat your skink handlers and they'll get attacks in combat unless topped by a spell or killed, whereas both your sallies could misfire until all the skinks are dead and they go berserk. It depends on your enemies really, low Ld armies can be crushed by both, reasonable Ld but low armour should be hit by krox, and reasonable Ld but high armour should be hit by sallies (-3 to armour saves from the sallies bad breath opposed to -2 from a kroxigors giant mace). If you're up against High Ld High armour but low toughness, take sallies, high toughness, take krox.
yeah, i know the theory... i just have a few problems with deplying kroxes and getting teh flank charge wich is what they are best (with M6 i can't see a better use for them). that is my problem tough and i'm working on it... its kinda hard tough when facing DoC with 15 dogs . i used sallies but i do have a problem with hiting... in the 6 turns i shot with them they ate 7/8 skinks and missed every single shot... got a partial once and the dice gods were not on my side... used them against VC so no panic anyway.... at least they held a table quarter and for some reason i keep comparing them with the skaven warpfire thrower wich is S5 and D3 wounds... the move and fire part is nice tough. i'll give them another shot once i see exaclty how useful kroxigors are, they tend to be the equivalent of the skaven rat ogres in the last book (fire magnet) wich is not that bad either... alltough quite expensive for that. sallies have the benefit of looking cooler tough
