Greetings fellow Old Bloods and Spawn Kin! This is my first post on here, so here goes: I have three large armies (Lizardmen, Chaos Dwarfs, and Daemons of Chaos) and have been back into warhammer for several months now, so I've grown quite accustomed to the 8th edition rules of the game through regular games with friends. Things have changed quite a bit since 5th edition, from what I can remember anyway (I was quite young back then!). I seem to have two kinds of opponent within my circle my friends who also indulge in The Hobby: horde armies (WoC, Skaven, Beastmen) and gun/bow lines (Dwarves/High Elves). The following list isn't necessarily modular, in that the units are increased in size for larger games as opposed to adding more and more units. Here is my 1500 point list to start with: Slann (General) (Higher State of Consciousness + The Focused Rumination + The Becalming Cogitation + Lore of Light) Scar Veteran BSB (enchanted shield + crown of command+great weapon + light armour) 29 Saurus Spearmen (full command) 16 Skinks (2 Kroxigor + musician + standard) 5 Chameleon Skinks 1 Stegadon 1 Salamander + 1 Extra Crew When the list is augmented to 2000 points it reads like this: Slann (General) (Higher State of Consciousness + The Focused Rumination + The Becalming Cogitation + Obsidian LodeStone + Lore of Light) Scar Veteran BSB (enchanted shield + crown of command+great weapon + light armour) 45 Saurus Spearmen (full command) 24 Skinks (3 Kroxigor + musician + standard) 2 x 6 Chameleon Skinks 1 Stegadon 2 Salamander + 2 Extra Crew and finally, for 2500 points it looks like this: Slann (General) (Higher State of Consciousness + The Focused Rumination + The Becalming Cogitation + Obsidian LodeStone + Cupped Hands of The Old Ones + Lore of Light) Scar Veteran BSB (enchanted shield + crown of command+great weapon + light armour) 59 Saurus Spearmen (full command) 42 Skinks (3 Kroxigor + full command) 3 x 6 Chameleon Skinks 1 Ancient Stegadon 3 Salamander + 3 Extra Crew So, there are the lists, what do you think? Are they an ideal setup for playing against hordes or gun lines? If you were playing against those kinds of armies, how would you use the list to beat them? Is there anything you would change on the list that would make it stronger against the above-mentioned armies? I look forward to your responses.
I don't like the scar-vet at all. If you want Stubborn, buying more Saurus is a better idea than the Crown of Command. The Enchanted Shield is almost literally useless, since he cannot use it in close combat (must use great weapon). With no extra defense, he is a bit squishy given that he provides the all-important BSB re-rolls. WoC and High Elves should have no trouble killing him in combat, Dwarfs can do it fairly often, and some Beastmen units will drop him too. Beyond 1500 points, I would absolutely move the BSB to the Slann. Obsidian Lodestone on the Slann looks like a waste to me. Certainly I would much rather know all spells. In the larger sizes, I think your Saurus block is too big, especially given your lack of skink skirmishers and your lore choice. The virtue of Lore of Light is buffing multiple units, yet you have only one unit that matters. The enemy can either take out other units and then avoid the slow Saurus, or they can get past enough other units to put a bunch of attacks on the Slann.
Thank you for your feedback, it is much appreciated: I made a few glaring errors there, so cheers for pointing them out! I hadn't tried this list yet, and the lists I usually play rarely have Saurus characters in as well, so I'm not used to tooling those guys up. Often I use more smaller and varied units instead of massive hordes as well, generally with a maximum unit size of 40. The most successful lists I've played have been twin slann in blocks of temple guard with the engine of the gods, and also lists with loads of skinks and a handful of stegs. Would you recommend many small units of skirmishers over less larger ones? I've only recently transitioned from using lore of life to lore of light instead. I've not often cast the higher power versions of the spells in the few games I've used lore of light in, and your right: buffing multiple units at once is a great idea! I haven't actually used 3 salamanders together yet: I tend to have bad luck with them when I run them by themselves so I wanted to give more a try. Would you say salamanders/razordons are good at whittling down hordes? Something else I don't ever try are units of 6 or so kroxigor: would you recommend this, or are they better off with the skinks? So many questions I know, but hey!
