I'm thinking about starting a Lizardmen army but I have some questins first 1. What should I start with? I thought about 2 battalion boxes, would that be a good start? 2. I read somewhere that you can convert some heroes from the battalion box? How do you do that? Would be nice to save some money. 3. How much of the army is plastic? Would be nice to know if I need some new glue 4. Do kroxigors get 3 attacks now when they are in a units of skinks? Are korxis good as a independent unit? 5. Has skinks change roll now with the new skirmish rules? Is blowpipes better than javlins? 6. How important are magic for Lizards? I know that slann is really good but I like the old blood model Mayby a slann is enough and then some scar-vets? Thats all for now but I'm sure I can come up with some more questions
I'm new myself but I think I can help with some of these: 1. I've worked out a 1500 point list from a battalion and a slann priest. 2 battalion boxes would be a bit overkill for me, I wouldn't want to have two units of cold one riders. 2. As I understand it the temple guard sprues have plenty of spare fancy bits which can be added to a cold one rider or one of the Saurus warriors and with a fancy paintjob they will look the part. 3. I may have missed something but Saurus warriors, Skinks (not the chameleon ones), Temple Guard, Cold One riders and the Stegadon are all the plastic kits, everything else is metal. 4. I've seen a topic elsewhere on here, I believe they attack from the second row with their full amount of attacks (no stomp attacks tho) but cannot be targetted back. 5. not sure on this one, think it's a matter of preference 6. To me Slann are the best magic casters in the game, and skink priests can offer great synergy with them. You can use the old blood models as scar vets, providing you make it clear to your opponent.
Like Skoby said, one Battalion box is enough for your purposes. Generally speaking a hero and battalion box makes about a 1,000 point army. While it is possible to convert a hero from a plastic model, I would seriously consider buying one - it makes them stand out more and look much more heroic. I used to convert my heroes from plastic boxes, and I still find those old models and cringe (although a combination of the Cold One and Temple Guard kits looks very nice...) . Depending on how you want to build your army, I would consider a box of either Saurus or Skinks in addition to the battalion. If you want a Slann, I would get another box of Temple Guard as well. For Skinks, I consider cohorts to be better than skirmishers because of cost and flexibility. A unit of 10 Skinks can perform the same job that 10 Skirmishers would for cheaper. Kroxigor in Skink units do indeed get 3 attacks, but no Stomp. In my experience a single Level 4 Wizard is enough for the whole army. If you want to go down the Oldblood route, I would consider an Engine of the Gods as an alternative in addition to some nifty special rules. My list has a Slann as well as several Scar Veterans, so that is not a bad option.
Lets see if I can put some opinion to this too. From my own perspective. 1. A single battallion is well enough. 2 is over-kill, I bought my second one more than a year after I started. Because 8th hit the shelves and I felt a need for more skinks and saurus. (including cold ones) 2. Most of my heroes are converted. Half of them actually, but that's a skink priest, chief and a saurus hero on a cold one. They look good, I won't say otherwise. For instance you get 12 skinks in the battalion, I only need 10 in each group so I took two and converted. Likewise with getting 8 (I think, didn't count) cold one riders led to me converting one of them. Do mind that the DE cold ones is just gorgeous though, and converting them ain't hard. 3. as noted the Saurus, skinks, cold one riders, Stegadon and Temple guard are plastic. But you get a skink priest and chief in the stegadon kit, so I guess those count too. 4. Krox get 3 attacks in skink units, yes. I haven't tried it but I reckon a unit of them are good too, but skinks are better off. 5. Skirmishers haven't really changed, although march blocking ain't working as good. But I do prefer blowpipes, they're versatile. 6. In 7th magic was way too important, in 8th not so much. Lizards don't need magic, but it helps. That help is good being gotten from a slann or even such a thing as a lone skink priest. (like I do) Cheers!
I went with 2 battalion as I'm restarting my Lizardmen. I figured I wanted: at least 16 TG (to go with my slann), at least 48 saurus (2 units of 24), some lizardmen heros (1 OB and 2 scar-vet) and at least 20 skinks (either for skirmishers, cohorts or to convert as chameleons). Now, 2 boxes of TG (for my 16 TG and 4 hero conversions), 3 boxes of Saurus and a box of skinks cost 173$ and 2 battalions come to 190$. That gives me 16 Cold-one cavalry for "free". They are not a very good unit choice, all thing being told, but still fun to have around! The downside is that I've got only 40 saurus. I thus added a box of saurus to bring me to 56. This way I can build enough with spears and with HW&S to be able to "change" my units. Remember that at 24 saurus per unit, it's perfectly acceptable to have only 16 (the first two ranks, say) with a type of weapons for the whole unit to count as armed with that weapon! I did order an Oldblood blisters and kinda remember the model being cool a few years ago. But now, with the awesome bitz in the TG sprues, I'll be leaving the poor pewter guy aside and convert my OB/SV! I'll also put my weight behind the Slann. OB are really great CC character, but I find that magic will influence the game more than a CC character from what I read. But I've yet to play an 8th ed. game, so my advice in that aspect is not worth much. I suggest you read some battle reports to make your mind! Phil
Thanks for all replies guys! It really helped a lot! I guess I start with one battalion and maybe a box of saurus and try to conver some heroes. Do anyone have picture of converted heroes? Would be great to see how they look in real life Is spear still the best choice for saurus or is HW&S better now?
They are both good, it a big debate right now. My take on it is like this: with a Slann, always spears, because your slann will ensure more staying power than a mere shield through buffs and possibly raise. With an Oldblood, shield might be necessary to keep your guys alive... Pgil
I can't say they look great, but they're decent. I wasn't really that great on the converting front at the time (I was green with greenstuffing) so ya. My skink priest Pic Pic Pic My skink Chief PicPic My Cold one rider Pic Pic Pic Yep, I'm happy to show them off, even though I have to say green cold ones wasn't my best idea. And the DE ones are still way cooler. Cheers!
They look nice What parts did you use? Do you need green stuff to make good conversion or could you just kit-bash? Is the battalion box, a box of saurus and a steggie a good start?
For the skink priest I used: Skink, Javelin, Cold one banner thing, Greenstuff and a skull from a dryad sprue. (I have a bunch of wood elves, so) Skink chief: Skink, Skink shield, Skink sword, some head I found laying about and Greenstuff Saurus: Cold one, Cold one rider parts, Armour from Saurus sprues, skink shields and two swords. Pretty much only the battalion box. Mind I wasn't that creative, bar the greenstuff. Something I'm making sure to be with my future Saurus heroes. Definitely. I personally would throw in a box of skinks afterwards too. 12 are kinda - mediocre, 24 more won't hurt. Cheers!
Here's a link to my first hero conversion pictures; with a little bit of time you can make them look good (better than mine anyway), but, more importantly, they are personalized the way you want them. http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/my-first-saurus-hero-conversions.3651/
Wow, Hellbreaker! Great representation of a great weapon on the mounted Scar Veteran! Mind if I steal?
Thanks to hellbreaker & Gor-rok for great pics and thanks to all other for great advise! Now I have enough insperation to start the army. All I need now is just some models... and paint.... and maybe some glue...
I can't really stop you. So go ahead if you want. Gambit, I'm glad you've gotten the inspiration. It's a good start for getting your hands on the other stuff. Chop chop now, you need to appease those folks in the painting section! Cheers!
Well, I bought a last minute ticket for a vacation so I probaly won't be starting up my LM army 'till september. Oh well I guess I have enough time to paint and glue models when the dark fall comes. Better enyoj the summer while it last
Just a quick question: Can Slann be target by archers if he is in a unit of TG? With the new TLoS I don't know...
No. You can't target a character in a unit unless you've got special rules saying so. Not too sure how it goes for large targets, but since he isn't, well who cares? Cheers!
In shooting I believe hits are randomised, then in combat the Krox are untargetable until they move up to the first rank or otherwise end up in base contact with an enemy. Cheers!
