On a hit an run, when the Terrandons fall back, do they get to choose their direction of movement, or must it be in the line of the charge? (Rules say to treat it as fleeing so seems to imply no choice in direction?) Also, when they fall back, if they run into another unit, are they destroyed in the same way as other fleeing units? The rules say the unit strength of a flyer is 1/model, but also says that a 40mm base is 3/model? Which is it for Terrandons? Makes a big difference for a unit of three on a flank charge.
(A) You are correct in assuming that you flee as normal. The only difference in the hit and run manuver is that you automatically regroup (and the opponent cannot pursue? (im having a blank for some reason)). As you regroup only after the flee, you can be caught in a cross-fire. The beauty of the hit and run is that it allows the terradons to assasinate characters in a manner that normally would be a suicide charge if done with a JSOD or FSOD. (B) As non-monster flyers (look in the BRB under flying units), each terradon has a unit strength of 1. As skirmishers, they cannot remove a rank bonus even if they were to have more than 5 in a unit.
Thanks. That is how we have been playing them. I was hoping I had been playing them wrong and they could land in a 360 degree distance on the dice.
Oh, just thought of another question. I was wondering if they get a save? I figured they were mounted units and so got a 6+ save but it sounds like based on the unit strength of 1 that they don't count as cav. If they did count as flying cav then they would be unit str 2 each right? (If they don't count as cav, they certainly should.)
I would suggest investing in the BRB. All of your questions can easily be resolved by looking through the flying units' rules.
I do have the rule book but I guess I was confused by the model and its stats. It clearly looks like a mounted unit and the skinks can throw javelins but the terradons are the only things that fight in cc. Its a little confusing as a unit as its a flyer, but on 40mm base. Most other 40mm models that fly and have multiple wounds are flying mounts (ie. pegasus, manticore, etc.) It seems to be a unit that has some stats that don't match the stark interpretation of the definition of flyer. *shrug*
The key difference between Terradons and Monsterous mounts (and if im not mistaken, Pegasus knights aswell), is that their stats are combined. In this way, they are much like dire bats and screamers (multiple wounds).
The pegasus knights work as flying mounted cavalry, for the most part they work as cavaly. Their horses have different attacks then their rider and the are unit s2
