Hey, just got back from a local tournament , 2 day, six games, won 3 lost 3 and came 13/30 which I felt was decent enough, There was almost no comp, the only comp that really effected me was A) only 12 dice per magic phase B) can't take crown of command on a slann So I took my usual filth, why not! Slann, BSB, War Banner, Shrieking Blade, Cupped Hands, Divine Plaque. Light, lore masters, becalming, higher state, rumination Scar Vet, Cold One, La, Charmed Shield, Dawnstone, Biting Blade Scar Vet, Cold One, VotFF,GW, LA, Dragonhelm, Amulet of Itzl, Skink Priest, level 2, scroll 28 saurus Full command 28 skinks, 3 Kroxigor, FC 10 skinks 10 Skink Skirmishers 10 Skink Skirmishers 5 Chamos 3 terradons 3 terradons 2 sallies 2 sallies Game 1 13-7 win High Elfs - Level 4 Book of Hoeth Beasts Dragon Mage, BSB prince Sea guard Archers Swordies White lions Eagle By Turn 2, I had shot off his Mage, the dragon failed its test and decided not to move again, blocking a lot of his army behind it, and I had cleared off the eagle He let the sallies in behind and they wrecked havoc on t3 elves, but no failed panic and although I weakened his units I could get into combat with them quick enough, He failed a lone Mage charge against a sallie, popped out the unit, transformed into a chimera but then I cupped hands a 4 over to him and he went down a hole! I killed level 4, eagles and a couple of archers, he got terradons and not much else, ended a 13-7 me, should have got into combat quicker but was conservative Game 2 Warriors Lost 19-1 due to scenario DP, level 4 nurgle, 2 chimeras, skullcrushers and mounted BSB, two chariots, 4 sets of dogs and 10 mauraders horsemen. It was blood and glory, and he managed to get skullcrushers DP and chimeras into my saurus block and after 2 turns the slann and saurus were dead, Rest of my army cleaned up everything else, and did get a chimera but he got slann, saurus and a scar vet and a little but of chaff, I broke on blood glory and he didn't, changing a 14-6 into a 19-1 sadly Game 3 Warriors 20-1 win for me A weird warriors list, had a lot of old units in it So level 4 metal disc rider A special character vilich? Warriors block, chosen block, 2 core chariots, 2 gorebeast chariots, 3 dragonogres and dogs Out moved him, killed disk rider with a 1+ AS and 3+ Ward rerolling 1, by turn 2 with two banishments, the bane of disk riders. Skrox unit destroyed the dragon ogres, sallamander were untouched and burn the hell out of the warriors and chosen, speed of light and Phas protection destroyed warriors then chosen, took everything off by turn 5, he got 2 units of skirmishers Game 4 Dwarfs, won 20-1 due to scenario 3 cannons, two organ guns, three thunderer units, two large blocks with BSB, thane and lord in them Dwarfs are an excellent match up for my army, Chaff removed some war machines and thunderers, skrox and saurus got dual charges followed by speed if light and Phas against his large block and kill it to a man (it was stubborn rerollable 10) then turned round and killed the second block with same buffs with ease, won easily Games 5 MSU High Elfs lost 8-12 Level 2 metal level 2 high Prince on a mount, Cav bus, Some swordmasters units, bolt thrower, 4 blocks of archers Elysian riders Chariots This game was a pleasure to play, very tactical, he didn't commit to any combats and removed my chaff with magic and shooting. I killed a couple of units with magic and scar vet charges and poison shots Neither of us got much and it was a 12-8 him Games 6 Warriors lost 4-16 General of a disk, hellfire sword Throgg Two units of trolls Two units of skullcrushers Two chariots Dog Knight bus This army had no magic and no shooting! Just charged across the table at me in a corner, ran throng and his trolls of the table, stopped the skullcrushers into a meaningful combat with redirectiors, his general got involved in a massive combat with saurus, who were flank charged by trolls, who were rear charged by skrox! Bubbled phas and speed of light, His general pass a Ld6 and a ld5 break test in two separate turns! Trolls didn't and fled, but he challenged out the scar vet, the champ and finally the slann, he made a lot of ward but succumbed to the d3 sword, saurus block survive, but skrox was destroyed by the knight bus on turn 6 So from the tournament I say: a) Light is amazing (I already knew this) , with rumination I can one dice most spells, bubbled Phas on only a 12+ is amazing and a bubbled speed of light on a 16+ is pretty decent, b) Salamanders are great, the people that didn't focus on removing them paid dearly, although they can thin out units, they are unlikely to kill units of get the points and I was to conservative to fully take advantage of the sallies c) how the hell do you deal with the new warriors? Chariots kill even salamanders in one round and have high T and numerous wounds and armour save. Chimeras are brutal unless you get them out of LD bubbles No idea how to deal with a 1+ 3++ DP. Any Ideas? They are so fast and I have little to combat them until I'm into comba with them They are characters killers who have to challenge I am thinking about taking a death slann instead of a light slann, can deal with armies in a nastier way, but this leaves me weak in combat, maybe iceshard and soulblight might help and doom and darkness make sallies brutal
New WoC can be tough due to their speed and resistance to poison. That said I find that if you have a Metal Slann you can really ruin their day. Even then the 1+/3++ is going to take a shit-load of magic and attacks to put down and frankly the only way you're going to generate enough dice to take him down is if you can zulu dawn him.
The new nurgle DP is probably the hardest nut to crack in the WoC list because it is unbreakable and everything short of a scar vet/OB in the lizzie army needs 6s to hit in CC (short of getting off speed of light). Perhaps the best approach is to try and pin it in place with a skrox block. Since the skrox cannot be thunderstomped, they can hold up the DP the entire game. As for the chariots, static combat resolution is the best way and hit them from a flank if possible. A mounted scar vet can also do well as long as he isn't eating the KB impact hits on the initial charge. No matter what though, the new WoC are definitely a handful and then some.
Yeah I thought there wouldn't be too much WoC (how wrong I was!) so didn't want metal because it is situational, I would have struggled against HE and dwarfs with metal, maybe dual slann light metal which I have run at big tournaments before might have helped but that steals all my tools, saying that I paid 50 points for becalming and 25 points for a scroll and played dwarfs, a wizard less WoC and a WoC that lost its level 4 turn two so didn't even come into effect, and the msu helf guy was smart and kept 25 inches away with his high Mage and attacked chaff with Magic missiles The chariots werent too much of a problem if you got behind them, just if they got straight on to my chaffs, I even flank charged one with a GW scar vet and he was killed over two rounds of combat and the chariots had one wound left! I tried to set up Skrox on DP but he flew past them with DP and chimera x2 and went unit the saurus block, 3 breath weapons and a load of attacks, steadfast round one, dead round two. Being unbreakable is ridiculous cant even combat res it to death! Though against an empire army, took a cannon ball turn 1, died, chimeras were 4 inches away, failed ld5 check and both fled off the table, that is like 1000 points going before the WoC guy got a turn!
WoC is probably the most popular tournament army right now for this reason. Scar vet cowboys, poison, and really reallly large units are how I've been handing warriors. I have been taking blocks of 35-40 saurus and 36 skrox in order to keep steadfast long enough to kill anything (at 2500 points). I also find myself more reliant on hexes than ever before. I used to use light or life by default, and I now use shadow whenever I take a single slann. Any of -D3 strength, -D3 toughness, and mindrazor will each win you a combat against warriors, mindrazor especially. Pit of shades is of course a winner too, however I normally only have 1 round before they engage me with chariots, princes, and chimeras so i dont get much direct damage off anymore.
