I have both the last codex and the new codex and I have a couple of questions about Kroak. 1. does he still posses magic people like he used to, 2. Is he a worth while investment over A Slaan, and 3. which is better old kroak or new kroak. I have noticed the new kroak has been nerfed quite a bit he can take 2 less wounds and only knows one spell but on the other side he is worth 400 points less so he no longer makes up half of the army.
Ummmm, first off, he dropped 625 points, he also has less toughness etc. Over a normal slaan, only if you know you can protect him and if your opponent WILL be getting close, you could use him as a DD puppet.... but he's pretty pricey for that at 600 points. But in big games, you should include him. But he isn't as flexible as a normal priest.... What do you mean do you mean "magic people"? Not to sound harsh or anything, but you said you've got both Army Books, so can't you just loo at what he has in his entry? Also, i can't find anything there... that is under "magic people"
Sorry I should of been more specific. when referring to magic people i'm referring to slaan and skink priests ie the magic users of the lizard men army sorry i should of been more specific. But i was just wondering if i was misreading something and I just wanted to make sure I'm using him right
Our Venerable Lord Kroak has dropped in power dramatically. Last edition he was 1225 pts and now he is 600 pts. And not worth those points unless you are playing a very high point game. He no longer can cast anything but Deliverance of Itza, making him at best an extremely expensive bomber, since the spell is cast in a radius centered on Kroak. He is more survivable than a normal Slann, but you lose the benefit of.. oh I dont know... actually being able to cast more than 1 spell. He no longer can possess other magic users either, again limiting his effectiveness. Basically, instead of having a Slann with extra powers, you instead have a 1 trick pony and you're still going to need a Slann. Overall a net win for points (you should be able to squeeze in a fully decked out Slann Mage-Priest within the 625 pts you are saving from last version), but ultimately a waste of points for most all purposes. Now, if you have points to toss around all willy nilly, you can take advantage of the two footnotes that are special to Kroak. 1 - You can add his 4 Power Dice to the army's general power pool. This could be a great boon for your *actual* spellcaster to fire off some serious magic (oh how mighty Kroak, the best magic user of all time, has fallen when he is just a power dice battery). 2 - You can make Kroak's unit of Temple Guard Unbreakable. Which is handy if you intend to actually use his 1 spell, since you need to be in the middle of the battle to do any good with it. In my opinion, our mighty Kroak has fallen pretty low. He's essentially a power dice battery for an actually useful Slann. He's too many points and too limited in scope to perform in a normal game (2000 or 2250 points), but you might toss him into a higher point game if you are going full on magic mayhem.
This is so very true, and also a very good idea. Also, you canbe an absolute ass like the guys in the LM release WD battle did, and made an uber unit of like 1200 points.... which was (for a massive points game... duh. The game itself didn't actually have a points value.... so that's why it was so good, but this unit would just plauge the battlefield with doom.) The unit contains Chakax, Kroak and like 20 temple guard (with full command gruop.) This unit, in the early stages will be closing in with the enemy, can give Kroak's PD to another slaan for better use, when they get into combat, Chakax will KO the unit champion/engage hero in challenge, the temple guard will do what they do best.... and finally, when you get into the thick of it (and abuse the palanquin power) can just use 6 PD to spam Kroak's spell in the center of the opponents army... And this is about the only way you can use Kroak to run around and kill stuff (and this is due to being protected by like 600 points of temple guard...)
I don't have the book with me right now but can kroak spam is one spell?? so wouldn't that mean that he could cast his 6" range version i don't know, like four or five times---- decimating the power unit that tried to mess with him.
Yes, he can cast it over and over, but whatch out for the forget spell miscast result, and Dwarfs with the Rune of Spell breaking... that's a real pain.
Kroak himself is unbreakable, has a 3+ ward save and has inherent troll slime powa. I don't think Kroak actually needs any body guards. He could really just throw 2 dice at his first iteration of the spell 3 times and ream anything within 6' of him real bad. He gives you a fireblast for 5+, which is extremely efficient. (and it's better against undead etc.) I would try running lard krowke just on his own and ditch the T.G. (or have him join something tard like Saurus, and just have him tank challenges.
Though i agree that he has power BUT i would say that a 3+ save can't get you very far just by itself, especially since now Slann are T4. Also, if he does die, then that's 600 points dead, and its not easy to win 600 points back when what you're using is a rather fragile giant toad (practically a giant "CANNON BALLS HERE" sign,) and will need to get close to the enemy to get his points back, which he will inevitably be shot atleast a few times.
Hmm. It just struck me that skitterleaping Kroak into action would be even more fun than doing it with an SoC Snikch. Not that we can skitterleap stuff, but the thought is nice...
This is the kicker. Sure he might be amusing for a bomber, but that above is why he really shouldnt ever be used as such. Even in a 3000 point game, that 1 model is 20% of your army.
Im glad i amuse =D I am definatly one of those people who thinks he should be used in a game of massive proportions.
Maybe I'm wrong, but as far as I know his lordliness can cast his spell through skink priests due to their "channeling" special ability. Correct me if it's not true, because actually I am thinking about buying him, after all you can play him as a normal slann, but if this ability doesn't work with him I think I'l just buy a normal slann, they are prettier to my opinion.
Nope. Channeling only works with Magic Missiles. Kroak's one and only spell is not a magic missile. Would have interesting possibilities if it were possible though. You also cant use him as a normal slann as he doesnt actually get any spells. This is what makes him such a failure, in my opinion. If he was allowed to choose a Lore like normal Slann, then I think I could convince myself to field him. No, he only knows 1 spell so unless your idea of 'using him as a Slann' means parking him in the middle of a unit of Temple Guard and just retaining victory points instead of taking victory points from your enemy, I really dont see how he could be used as a normal Slann. Really, his best attribute is that his 4 Power Dice enter the general army pool, letting more useful caster's use his Power Dice.
I dunno, that 3+ save is pretty hideos, not to mention, kroak is not T 4, he's T 5, and has 6 wounds. AND.... his golden mask gives people -1 to shoot at him, so it's not that big a deal. (and in melee) I really think kroak could just waddle around on his own and not worry about people beating his ass too badly. Against empire, well...3+ is still good. (they won't be shooting at a stegadon, which has only a 5+ save versus cannons in the form of it's skink save) Against V.C. single kroak would be horrifically useful, just bomb the heck out of them with the level one version and ream some unit terribly.
I think what Cuauhtémoc means, Snowywlf, is that one can use the model to represent a normal Slann priest, not use Kroak with the same strategy as a normal Slann. IMO Kroak would be more useful if he was faster, so you could run him into the middle of your opponent's army and spam his explosion.
