I have recentrly done my first game (and will soon attend a tournament) with renegade lizardmen. I had a Slann with BSB Sorcerous void, Earthen rod and High Magic. Got all spells except ethereal and reserve move (the number 1). I played against O&G and it didn't so well, couldn't cast fiery convocation two times (yeah even with +1 of ancient stegadon did twice 9) and those time i casted it it moved quite a lot and made few kills. Then i notice that the ward save (shield of sapphire) only works in your turn, so not so usefull as a defensive spell. The extra attack was good but the range quite low. So you need a skink priest to be useful with it. Last the Tempest spell. A good one, but it always got dispelled before even kill some fanatics. Lore Familiar The reason i don't play lore familiar on Slann are essentially 3: 5 spells are often enough to get what you want, even if it's a risk with high magic since you have only 1 damage spells at distance (against 2 of elementalism and battle magic). I prefer to get our signatures spells (since signatures of battle magic and elementalism are pretty useless now, high magic signature is ok but get often dispelled) The third is that for 5 points i can get a reroll on miscast (with Earthen Rod) and avoid to explode together with temple guard. Not essential but good to have. The last, and maybe most important, is that I used a skink priest on foot with elementalism och Lore familiar (to get the damage spells or Plague of Rust). --------------------------------- So after this battle i am reconsidering which school of magic should we choose with the slann and, if you play also a skink caster, what should you choose with the skink. Both elementalism and battle of magic have good damage spells AND extra movement/teleport. Maybe the skink could still have lore familiar and get elementalism eller battle magic as well and complete these spells that you miss with the slann. Any suggestions/idea/consideration?
I havent had a game yet with renegades, but i think im coming to a similar conclusion, high is nice i do like it but im taking lore familar to get around the 2 spells that were not that good pre-renegade. But with renegade LF feels much less useful. Id go for Battle magic on teh slann as i think its generally just the best and elementalism or BM with monsoon on the skink
