    Hey guys!

I was a big time Warhammer player more or less from the ages of 9 to 16, taking to the field to be regularly crushed with my adored ogre horde (I played a lot, but I still sucked). I then took a hiatus as I went through sixth form, partially due to a loss of interest amongst my friends and partially due to some staff changes at my favourite GW. Now I'm 19, and, due to finally discovering the advantages of gainful employment, in a financial position where building a new army is feasible (even with the apparently colossal price hikes in that time). However, if I'm starting fresh, I want to start fresh, and that means a completely new army; so I've come over to check out the force which always looked most interesting to me: Lizardmen.

TLDR: Returning player looking at starting Lizardmen.

I can't say I ever played much against lizardmen in 7th, and not at all in 8th or with their new book, so I do have a couple of questions.

    1) From what I understand, skinks seem to be the way to go, but they were my least favourite aesthetic part of the army, is it possible to make a semi-competitive list without them? (the basic skirmishers, I quite like the teradactyle riders and the monster packs)

    2) Are the carnosaur and Slann viable picks? I would probably run one either way, but as my entire old playgroup has moved out of London, and I don't know what level of players I will be facing, it'd be good to know if I'm making smart choices or not.

Thanks so much for your time, hopefully I'll be scaly by the end of the month.

    Seb.

Welcome to the true path of the old ones! Check out the Army List and Tactics sections to help you determine what type of army to build. Skink Cloud armies seem to be popular and successful. I still play with blocks of saurus and temple guard in addition to some skinks. I have fun and still manage to win some games.

Where abouts in London are you buddy?
I'm new to Lizards too - and have already been pointed to the Tactica section - It is beneficial.
I really want to use Saurus, with skinks as skirmishers only, but this does not appear to be competitive (not that I do competitions!)
Depending on points you can run a Carnosaur and a Slann, as long as its a scar vet on the dino as he is a Hero, while the Slann is a Lord.
That said I really want to try twin carnosaurs plus Tetto. Only thing is I need to get a second Carnosaur and Tetto!

    Oh hi there!

The slaan is great, the carnosaur is a bit tricky to keep alive but fun. =)

I usually run a block of 35 saurus and 3-4 units of skink skirmishers and it is quite effective.

I think that you will find that saurus heros and lords on cold ones is mighty fine and fun to have in the army.

    Welcome to lustria!

Welcome to the forum! International tournament LM players seem to favor Skink Cloud lists based on points denial, but I've never met someone who does that routinely. It is a little boring and annoying to play against armies like that.

I would give this Tactica a read, there are LOTS of ways to build a LM army. Not every army needs Skink Skirmishers. Very few army builds need LOTS of Skink Skirmishers.

I tend to take one unit of 20 Cohort Skinks in every list (to hold buildings mostly) and a unit of 13 Skink Skirmishers per every 1000 points of my army. More than that seems to be unwieldy, at least to me personally.

Ah that sounds fantastic, glad I won't have to be moving too many skirmishers around.

Thanks for your help, I'll give the tactica a good read :)

I'm in North London, but I tend to head up to Covent Garden GW to play.

    Cheers again
