Does anyone actually use the 25pt magic item (weapon?) allowance on the Temple Guard champion?

With such low Initiative and his Halberd giving him the nice S5, giving him a Magic weapon seems something of a waste.

Anyone got an ideas, because at the moment I just don't see its use.

I've tried him with the sword of battle (+1 attack), not sure if is really worth the investment though unless he has has an initiative boost too

The main advantage is that he gets to use his shield in combat for a 3+ AS. If you take a Gold Sigil Sword (I10) you'll probably get to make your 3 S4 attacks before you get slaughtered in a challenge and the 3+ AS just might be enough to reduce overkill a bit. Not everyone is S7+. I10 also prevents most ASF characters from getting rerolls.

I'm not sure I'd bother but it could be useful in some situations.

    Init10 sword.
    3+ armor.
Can hurt ethereal. (usually 2 hits, 1-2 wounds).
That's about it. If you're already taking the unit champ, it doesn't hurt to spend 15 point on a mostly go first sword.

I don't think I'd ever make a TG unit without reading a magic weapon on the champ. Dealing with ethereals is way too useful of an ability, especially when the rest of our army is so lacking in that department. Even if it's just the biting blade, I don't mind losing a tiny bit of combat effectiveness in general to ensure I have solutions to spirit hosts and ethereal characters.
