8th Ed. Ripper Riders and Spears

So I am fairly new to Warhammer and I want to add some ripper riders into my army. I am wondering how their spear rules work. The BRB says that mounted units with spears get +1 strength when they charge but in subsequent rounds of combat they must use their hand weapons. However, the rippers do not have hand weapons. So do they always get the +1 strength due to only being able to use spears or just when they charge? Thanks in advance.

Page 88 of BRB says "we assume all troops and characters have turned up to the battle with at least one suitable fighting hand weapon each, although many troops are equipped with one or more specialised weapons."

So they do have hand weapons even if they aren't listed, so only +1 str on the charge
