Would making an army comprised entirely of Saurus, (cold one cavalry, scar vets, saurus warriors, ect.) work, or would it be butchered at a range before it could get into combat? My idea in using such an army was to simply rush the enemy full speed, relying on Scaly Skin and high toughness to win the day. Could I pull that off, or do I need some skinks for support. Finally, do Temple Guard work well on the offensive, without a Slann to guard, or should I fill my special slots with Cold One Cavalry?
If you are concerned about casualties prior to engaging the enemy then obviously fill those specials out with cavalry. Though this idea could work I suppose, you'd find the magic phase a triffle hard to deal with mind you, I never leave home without a scroll or two.
It sounds like you'd have a lot of trouble with the magic phase. You could perhaps break from lore and make a 'counts as' Skink priest. Alternatively, you could try to lock their magic phases down long enough to take down their mages and to end the magical threat. Things that could buy you time (but aren't exactly reliable) would be the Cube of Darkness and the Plaque of Dominion. Pop the cube of darkness on their very first spell and you have a 50% chance to end their magic phase. This should give you enough time to bring your plaque of dominion somewhere in line of sight of their mages, to force them to take stupidity tests in their phases. Of course, that's all rather luck based. If you fail to end their magic phase and they keep making their stupidity checks, you're very likely to get butchered by magic because of a lack of dispel dice.
imo, that would be a good way to go. not only does it give you a semi-solid magic defense, you can give your saurus some good ranged protection as they advance, and potentially let off a nasty burning alignment, and chuck a bunch of dice at a decent spell if you happen to roll one
I took a (nearly) all Saurus list to an Indy GT about a year ago and I ended up 3-2-0. My main force was purely Saurus Warriors with a unit of 6 COC and 15 TG's as support. I had 3 block units of 20 saurus warriors and even had my OB on foot. One of my SV's was on a cold one as well and another was the BSB. No priests or magic of any kind. I even went with no magic items. At all. My magic defense was only 2 dispel dice and hoping that they either couldn't cast their spells or miscast. Unless you're going against a purely magic heavy army then you have a good chance of winning IMO. Saurus are very resilient making us break is a hard thing to do. I can't remember the exact list that I took but I had a lot of units out there since I didn't spend it all on magic items and big dinosaurs. Thus, one of your strengths would be in numbers. I would say that you could get away with a few magic items and it would definitely help you but I think you can make an all saurus army and be ok. Of course, there are some exceptions where you would have a small chance of winning but you need to determine if that will make or break your decision. Just my 2 cents... Iggy Koopa
I don't think this idea (all saurus) would work particularly well against most balanced lists being used by skilled players. You would be, in general, too easily out maneuvered and be pretty beat up in the magic phase. This is assuming that there are no skinks (or frog) at all in the army.
i know that this might break the all saurus list but it wouldn't hurt having at least 2 EotG because that 5+ ward save from the engine would really help against shooting. and it takes all focus away from the saurus and aimed at the engines. but 3 big blocks of 20 saurus and 2 small blocks of 10 saurus would be nice to see on the field. I WOULD NEVER PUT TEMPLE GUARD on the field without a slann. they are only worth their points with a slann. field the COC and saurus warriors!!!! show the toughness of the saurus!!!! and why not have 4 Scar vets if this is your idea.
