So I just finished painting my 40 Saurus with spears for my 2500 point army. Now I need to decide the formation. Should I make them a horde and go 10x4? That seems really wide. Perhaps 7 or 8 across would be a more manageable size? I would really appreciate everyone's experience.

6 or 10 wide is probaly best, sometimes 7... don't forget you are allowed to reform the unit during the game.

I find 5 wide and 10+ back doesn't make your opponent happy ;p

id say 5-6 wide is usual (usually with 20-25 models in the unit) or a full horde of 40. I am not a fan of the horde since it is very expensive, but to each his own i guess.

i find 30 full command and 6 ranks deep sufficiant for any challenge that saurus can face, leaves room for plenty (20 in 2 groups of 10 at 2k) of skirmishers who can shoot your enemy, if you add 2 characters and a slann the slann sits in the second rank, and no one has shown me anything to suggest the slann cannot act from this posistion. the extra person who can accept a challenge is often useful and regrowth means he comes back :)

however there are things saurus need support to face and win against, often this support is magical sometimes this is stegadon et al smashing into the back/flank, aim to offer this support and they generally won't disapoint.

cold blooded stubborn with rerolls is almost impossible to fail however you need other plans such as temple guard, stegadon, buffs

hordes offer too much frontage to the foe since there are smaller based units you can be charged by a horde and a support unit,
