Personaly I think I wil try forgoing spears for a while, since it only makes 2 attack stronger and ony if you charge, and only for one round.... I wish we had got some real lances this sedition.
Agreed. I really thought they would give them an option to take lances or even great weapons. All they would need is to release an upgrade sprue with 8 arms on it, but, alas, it was not meant to be. Anyway, I think at 15 ss per model they are pretty decent without the spears. Spears just don't seem worth the upgrade. With 4 S4 attacks and 2+ saves, they should be able to grind through a lot of opponents. I look forward to trying them out with a scar-vet joining them. Hopefully yours wont be stupid on a critical turn every other game, as mine usually are.
My plan is to run spears on small units (where the main work is likely to get done with the charge round. If I run with a larger group that means I probably want staying power so the spears will produce rapidly diminishing returns. Ergo I'll save the points and take hand weapons
My thought is spears is alone and handweapons if you have a hero attached. The hero can help out with the really hard armor, and in a grind-fest, the spears won't help. -Matt
Sure as hell not ripping the arms off my miniatures and remaking them as HW CoC. And no way would I ever buy another box of CoC from GW to make a whole new unit. The decision to increase the point cost when arming cavalry with spears is downright baffling! Lances or 2 handed weapons would have been great, but making a questionable unit worse just makes no sense at all. None.
Why would the cost to give a Cold One rider a spear not be reasonable when a Scar-Vet pays 50% and an Oldblood 75% of that cost for a spear? Oh wait, I could think of one or two reasons... anyway, as far as I can tell the spear option seems slightly more efficient on the charge while the hand weapon option is substantially better while grinding. This to me indicates the spears are overcosted. If the game plan calls for and relies on consistently maximizing damage on the charge, spears seems fine. Otherwise hand weapons would appear the safer bet.
I try to look at the glass as half full. Saurus Cavalry with spears cost 34 points each now, they used to cost 35 points. They have Predatory Fighter now and command options cost half as much.
you don't get parry on mounts so grind power is pretty much the same they way i look at it is our specials is over bloated so i never big groups of cold ones i like to give them spears because i like to use them as flankers charge in with combat get ready for the next charge so i like to make that charge count plus is helps me out when some monster is holding up papa stega s5 attacks will help out but i agree they are over priced on already overpriced unit so my cold ones don't see much play but when they do they got spears
In my opinion that point cost for +1S on the charge (if they charge) is a lot in the competitive setting Fluff wise and modelling wise spears do make more sense I am running mine as HW only in the all comers list If i had a 1:1 against armor heavy list I would take them
