Hey guys, I was wondering if it was possible to screen the carnosaur with some skinks. Like if my enemy has cannons or bolt throwers would i be possible to use some skirmishers to just always be in front/side of him and make him impossible to hit with cannons?
I believe that is impossible because Carnosaurs a large target. If you deploy barriers across the middle of the table your carnosaur can hide behind them to stop a cannon ball from bouncing to it but that relies on both rolling it on the terrain chart and deploying terrain before your opponent.
I believe with 8th edition it's real line of sight, so unless your skinks are way up on top of a hill in front of you carnosaur I don't think they can screen.
Carnosaurs aren't large targets. It should get a -1 for soft cover, unless skirmishers never give cover.
In the brb it states the intervening obstacles must cover the majority of the model being shot at in order to give cover (since it is TLOS, as long as you can see a bit of the carnosaur you can shoot at it) so except for some unusual situations, skinks will never give cover to a carnosaur, ialthough if they did, it would -2 for hard cover, as units are always hard cover not soft cover. So a cannon should almost always be able to shoot at the carnosaur, skinks aren't a very good screen. Tbh if the skinks are in front of the carnosaur, aim the cannon at them and hit the carnosaur on the bounce because even a non killed skink doesn't stop a cannonball and you are likely to kill a skink and hit the carnosaur
You could probably screen it with a stegadon. It would be an expensive screen though... It'd probably be better to give the engine of the gods' ward save bubble to it, and/or Pha's protection.
Even better, if there is only a single cannon, hit it with the Net of Amytok and it won't be able to fire at all. Unfortuantely Net or Pha's Protection implies a list with a Slann AND a Carnosaur and that means it only applies to high point games.
Thanks for the info guys, I would really love to run a saurus oldblood killing machine but that threat of just getting one shot by the cannon sucks. Too bad that ward saves do not apply to the mount as well.
I think we've been playing something wrong - if a cannon ball is bouncing through a unit and fails to kill a model, does it keep on moving?
I believe so, unless the unit is a monstrous anything, see pg113 of the BrB, it says it hits everything unless A) fails to kill a monstrous model B) hits an obstacle So if it fails to kill a skink it keeps on going just tosses the dazed skink aside. Even though you had been playing it wrong, I bet cannons still owned! That's how insane they are
As someone who has been playing Carno’s in tourneys the last year, there are ways to mitigate against cannons. -Charmed Shield on the Old one. This way if the Carno gets one shoted, the Old blood will likely survive and deny the points to the opponent. Though realistically it will take two cannon shots to take down a Carno. - EoTG, 5+ ward from shooting is handy. -Skrox Screen. While skinks do not stop cannon balls, Krox do. Making the opponent bounce a cannonball through a Krox (especially one that has the 5+ EoTG Ward save up) goes a long way to keeping the big boy alive. -Target Saturation. Frankly, your opponent is more likely to shoot the EoTG. -Use terrain. Obstacles, buildings, and hills are all your friend. The Carno is highly mobile and can make great use of terrain while projecting a threat range. -lots of warmachine hunters. You must bring cham skinks, terradons, single sallies, etc. in great numbers to bring immense pressure on those warmachines. Players will often worry about keeping those warmachines alive and make sub-optimal decisions.
No one has mentioned using razordons as a screen for a Carno. They are probably the cheapest option and you could Congo line them in front of it to have greater chances of stopping the cannon.
But then your opponent could argue that it hit a skink which isn't monstrous and the ball would keep going.
In the most recent FAQ I believe that handlers were clarified to work more like a 3 use 5+ Ward Save. They would indeed stop the cannonball due to the Monsters and Handlers rules.
Damn. I'm facing off against two dwarf players and two empire players in an upcoming league. And I don't want to get blown away and see my Stegodons and Carnosaur destroyed by the third turn. :/
