just wondering if you guys think its worthwhile putting my scar vet who is in a unit of saurus on a cold one, from what i can see he will get an extra +2 to his save which would be nice. and the cold one attack. i notice i will lose 1 supporting attack from behind him but are there any other benefits or disadvantages that im missing. Also do you guys run this set up or just keep him on foot?
If you take a scar vet on a cold one, you should also try to take 9 other cold one cavalry. This is going to be a hefty (expensive unit) coming in at 300+ points (without the scar vet). But in order to break ranks you need the 10. You have to get those flank charges too. A scar vet with fencing blades and buffs from either the lore of light (WS10 or I10, ASF) or lore of life (+4 toughness with throne of vines) will be a sight to behold.
so if he was going to be in a unit of saurus you wouldnt do it? dont think i was very clear i mean to use him in my saurus with only the scar vet mounted
the good side is the increased AS and +1 cold1 attack in challenges (in CC, the attack equals out with the 1 missing supporting attack). the BIG downside is, that the whole unit gains stupidity. plus 20 pts for the cold1 - in my view definitely not worth it. and 1 more practical observation - I used a hero on cold1 once. the unit was facing sideways to a catapult. if the hero was on foot, the catapult couldn't have targeted him directly, as they wouldn't see him. but as he sticks out when mounted, they targeted him directly, hit on spot. he failed his "look out sir" and was squished but this is an extreme example, you should rather consider the points above it as the relevant ones.
hmmm.... I don't think I would mount him next to the saurus. He would become a pin cushion at the least. I would probably drop him into the saurus. I would also make sure to take a unit champion in the suarus. That way, if you get challenged, you can waste the champion on the challenge and let the scar vet get all his attacks against the unit (hopefully winning the combat for you).
ok thanks for the good advice guys i will just keep him on foot the extra points can be better spent elsewhere anyway. Thanks again
Under 8th, I don't believe that the mounted Scar Vet gets a Look-Out-Sir roll if he is in a unit of Saurus (please correct me if I'm wrong). This is a significant draw-back to mounting your Scar-Vet. As was mentioned, the other major issue is the fact that the Cold-One's Stupidity can affect the whole unit. That usually isn't a concern, especially if your BSB is nearby, but it always seems to hit at the worst possible time.
I've just checked - you are right - thx for correcting me. the character needs to be the same troop type as the unit. while mounted, he is obviously a cavalry model in a unit of infantry, which means no "look out sir!" for him.
I have heard other people say cavalry dont get look out sir in a infantry unit before but I have never been able to find it in the rule book. Could you tell me were I can find this rule? All I have been able to find is you need to be the same unit type to get look out sir for lone characters
The same rule you found that says they must be of the same troop type. If a character is a cavalry troop type then he is not an infantry troop type ( like the infantry unit in question) and thus cannot get a LoS from them.
The rule I found (page 97) only applies to lone characters. If I join a unit its not a lone character anymore.
