I'm tweaking my army list for a 2600 point SCGT comp tournament and looking for some feedback on some proposed changes. BEFORE: Slann Mage-Priest - Channelling Staff, Harmonic Convergence, BSB (Standard of Discipline), Lore of Light Oldblood - The Blade of Realities, Light Armour, Shield Scar-Veteran - Armour of Destiny, Great Weapon Skink Priest - Dispel Scroll, Lore of Beasts 24 Saurus Warriors - Command, Spears 3x 10 Skink Skirmishers - Javelins, Champion 15 Skink Cohorts - Command, Kroxigor Bastiladon - Solar Engine 2x 5 Chameleon Skinks 5 Cold One Riders - Command, Spears 25 Temple Guard - Command, Razor Standard Razordon Hunting Pack - 1 Razordon, Extra Handler Razordon Hunting Pack - 1 Razordon, Extra Handler AFTER (with thoughts): Slann Mage-Priest - Channelling Staff, Harmonic Convergence, Soul of Stone, Lore of Light Oldblood - The Blade of Realities, Cold One, Shield Scar-Veteran - BSB, Armour of Destiny, Great Weapon Skink Priest - Dispel Scroll, Lore of Beasts 24 Saurus Warriors - Command, Spears 3x 10 Skink Skirmishers - Javelins, Champion 14 Skink Cohorts - Musician, Standard, Kroxigor Bastiladon - Solar Engine 2x 5 Chameleon Skinks 5 Cold One Riders - Command, Spears 24 Temple Guard - Command, Razor Standard Razordon Hunting Pack - 1 Razordon, Extra Handler Razordon Hunting Pack - 1 Razordon, Extra Handler If the blade of realities ultimately doesn't work, then I'll drop him back to having the 1+/4++ with piranha blade. But i'm liking the psychological advantage and given the right spells, the huge character killing opportunity it presents. But any thoughts on all aspects of the army, please don't hesitate!
This for axemaster? As cute as the blade is (the looks would almost make it worth fielding) an oldblood for those points kitted out is scary strong. Not sure what my final build will be, but i'm running Piranha blade with a str pot atm. Eats +1 when you need it too and everything else when you don't. Even a great weapon just gives it more of a threat range on what you can and can't fight. I'd also prob drop the razor stnd. At 65 points you get 4 more TG with change, an extra razor, or I would make 1 unit of camos 7 and field a terra chief with egg(but I love that item). Otherwise your list looks good, and as much as I like Light I feel it doesn't suit your list. Either metal or high(boosting razors bs is good times) would suit your army a little more.
Thanks for the reply (assumingly) fellow Victorian! Yeah it is for axemaster, but i've been thinking about this list all week and i'm considering dropping it back to the 1+/4++ Piranha Blade build, for no other reason than the fact that i've converted a very convincing Piranha Blade Oldblood out of the Chakax model and pieces from the carnosaur kit. What did you sacrifice to get the potion of strength? No ward save? For the Blade of Realities, the fact that you can take zero real protection from tooled up characters (which is who I would want to fight to get the most value out of the investment). So I need to ensure that I strike first. Lore of light is the only lore that can provide this. I'm also considering going with beast on priest and heavens on slann if I drop back to piranha blade. Being that our troops are low WS, it's a nice idea to be able to level the playing field with a well placed Iceshard Blizzard or Curse of the Midnight Wind. I'll give it a practice game and see if it works at all. I do not own any terradons, otherwise I might do that, but I'd have to take a unit too, make sure he isn't blown out of the sky. I've also been toying with Jungle swarms to get some poison going on the higher Toughness enemies. That's scored me a few extra wounds on a steam tank, which ultimately caused its death the following steam point generation roll.
I don't know the comp system you'll be in, but I would recommend dropping the Saurus block entirely unless you don't have the models to field the core. I'm assuming your comp structure won't allow you to take all skink core? If it's a unit NUMBER max, then just field larger units of cohorts with musicians for rallying/reforming. I just want to give you a high-five for running the blade of realities and I see exactly what you're trying to do with it, but the fact is, you can't rely on magic to do anything for you. You can invest in it, hoping you'll get a return on your investment, but not much more. The second your list becomes transparent in its intensions, then any savvy opponent will immediately know where and what to focus on. In this case, not letting your OB get WS 10 ASF. I also didn't have much luck with Channeling Staff / Harmonic Convergence when I could have taken other things for the points. It's usually a red flag for comp too, so you could probably improve your comp score by dropping it and giving your Slann a power stone for the turn you really want to push the envelope on getting some spells off. lastly, can you not take Tetto'eko in the format? He's awesome!
Thanks furiouscado for your reply. The Blade of Realities is simply devastating, but it heavily relies on magic, otherwise it's nothing more than the obsidian blade (in that the oldblood kills plebs, not characters). For example, I get my Speed of Light off on him, challenge and Karl Franz hides behind his Reiksguard unit champion who dies. He can't hide in his turn and dies. But without one or the other (speed of light, birona's timewarp) it's a sitting duck. I need the magic, which is why I coax out dispel dice with the bastiladon And it's not about transperancy, it's about fear of the known. An opponent will see the spells, and the blade and will steer very clear with their high value characters - meaning I already have the upper hand. However, because i've converted up an oldblood/piranha blade, I'm giving him a second chance tonight to redeem himself after a rubbish game on my first practice match (1+/4++, Piranha blade build). I've decided to go with Heavens on the Slann and Beast on the Skink. I like almost all the spells in Heavens and they work well with my unlucky rolling. And if I luck out a Savage Beast of Horos, then a joyous fight it will be, otherwise Wildform will be sufficient. The system comps the 4th unit of skirmishers, and I don't own enough skinks to fill the core with them. Also, only having one combat unit is not good with a turn 4-5 combat army as I wouldn't reliably be able to get enough points in 2 turns. Maybe. But I'd be nervous about it in any case EDIT: Worth noting that the list in this thread is a bit outdated adn that my next build is in my war stories thread (signature)
I am indeed (frankston) My OB doesn't have a ward save, he does have the charmed shield (couldn't find room in my current build for a terrachief of quango). I don't normally bother protecting the chief, if they want to throw cannonballs at it, it's normally good for my dino's. I tend to field carnos, stegs and basti's. My current build is very similar to yours and totally diff to what I normally play so most of this is grain of salt thoughts. And unless you have a praticular distaste for special characters tetto is bonkers good.
