Hey gang, I'm fairly new to KoW, but I've done middling well in local tournaments in my year at the game. My main problem is that I only get to play at tournaments and so don't get as much table time as I'd like. I've decided to go all in on Salamanders for this coming year, with the goal of getting into Masters contention in my region (lofty, unattainable, etc). After a few weeks of toying around with lists, I've come up with the following. Give me your thoughts: Prime Regiment Ghekkotah Warriors Regiment x 2 Ghekkotah Hunters Troop Fire Elementals Horde x 2 Greater Fire Elemental Ghekkotah Skyraiders Regiment Lekelidon x 3 Mage-Priest - Heal, Surge, Inspiring Talisman Mage-Priest - Heal, Surge Clan Lord on Fire Drake with Wings - Blade of Slashing I feel like I need more inspiring, and possibly a horde of Primes to absorb punishment, but this is where I'm starting. Advice?
If you ask me I feel the list is quite well balanced, I like the double Fire Elementals Horde plus a GFE, I like the two Mage-Priests too, maybe take heal away from one of them, I don't really like to load my mages with too many spells. Maybe even consider changing one for a Herald with the Healing Charm if you need the points and more inspiring (That is 50 free points) I prefer the Skylord to the Regiment of Skyriders too, don't know why really as statistically they are the same but I find the smaller footprint is EXTREMELY useful but I guess you dont have any Hero slots available. Personally I think that you should ditch one of the Lekelidons, those 95 points are enough to upgrade the Primes Reg into a Horde and if you decide to change one of the Mage-Priests into a Herald those 55 points spare will equip your Fire Elementals with something nice like the Blessing of the Gods (ELITE, really usefull when you have CS2 but only hit on 4s) and Chant of hate to the other (VICIOUS with CS2 is amazing). Alternatively if you took out Heal from the other Mage as well you could buy Elite for one and +1 to hit for the other (70 points), with 4s to hit on your main combat units you can have some nasty surprises sometimes.
I agree with much of Itepixcauh is saying; Skylord is better than Skyraiders. Replace one Mage-priest with a Herald. Possibly let go of a Lekelidon as well. On top of that, I would do whatever it takes to put Ensorcelled armour or Medallion of life on the Clan Lord. It makes him more survivable and he is a guy you want to stick around til the end. That would land you something like this: Salamander Primes (horde) Ghekkotah Warriors (regiment) Ghekkotah Warriors (regiment) Ghekkotah Hunters (troop) Fire Elementals (horde) Fire Elementals (horde) Greater Fire Elemental Lekelidon Lekelidon Herald Mage-priest on Kaisenor with Heal, Surge and Inspiring talisman Clan Lord on Winged Fire Drake with Ensorcelled armour Ghekkotah Skylord That's 1965 point, giving you 35 for items. You could possibly drop Heal on the Mage-priest for another 15.
Oh God yes, forgot about the item on the Clan Lord, I'm so used to it being a staple that I forgot about it. DO IT! I prefer the armour personally but both options are as good. Then as @Rapax suggested I would seriously consider dropping the other heal and buy magic items for the Fire Elementals (Blessing and Chant IMO)
I usually go for Brew of Sharpness and Blessing but those 20 extra points are hard to come by sometimes
Thanks everyone! I trend away from magic items, but mostly because I learned to play the game with elves, and they don't really need them. This is what I'm going to build: Salamander Primes (horde) Ghekkotah Warriors (regiment) Ghekkotah Warriors (regiment) Ghekkotah Hunters (troop) -chamelon cloak Fire Elementals (horde) -blessing of the gods Fire Elementals (horde) Greater Fire Elemental Lekelidon Lekelidon Herald Mage-priest on Kaisenor with Heal, Surge and Inspiring talisman Clan Lord on Winged Fire Drake with Ensorcelled armour Ghekkotah Skylord I do want to try triple Lekelidon someday, maybe with troops of Gheks providing cover to the counterbattery fire. They just seem so good. But I suppose I'll need to learn the army a little first. Second question - I'm going to try this out on Universal Battle. Is there a guide to that monstrosity somewhere? I don't want to page through 400+ armies to find the stuff I need, and would rather have my army assembled before I host a game. Is that even possible? Thanks again!
i have run triple lekilodon before. It worked really well. They are great at grabbing objectives. Also with three ypou can focus fire on one unit and take a chunk out of it.
