Ok, so I haven't played alot, mostly against High Elves and Orcs and my army is far from complete, but I've been playing around with the idea of a Skavenpelt Banner in a Saurus unit. Make a Skink Chief BSB and give him the banner, slap him in a unit of Saurus along with an Oldblood or Scar-Vet and you have one beastly unit, Core with 3 attacks? Yes please. Might even make it a unit of TG for the extra WS and S from halberds, and even give them War Banner aswell so they won't lose their Frenzy, but that would eat away quite alot of points. So, while the idea sounds fun to me I'm not really sure how viable it would be, and that's where you guys come in! Give me your thoughts and opinions!
imo, it costs more than it is worth. for less points you could get another scar vet to add combat results. it is fun yes, but it is very vulnerable and not hugely effective.
That is a lot of points. The Skink Chief is not difficult to kill. 20 Temple Guard with a Magic Banner and Full Command along with a cheap Skink BSB = 460 points at least.
as pointed out by some one else recently, characters can not join SKrox units, since they have the unit type unique. EDIT: also, how would 10 extra WS2 S6 attacks be better than an extra 10 WS3 S8 attacks you would get from putting in in a saurus horde, with the same mindrazor cast upon it??
Actually, I read characters can join Skrox units because Unique units aren't listed in the rulebook as units characters CAN'T join, but neither are they listed as units they CAN join, however, the Skrox being infantry and monstrous infantry they are composed of two troop types that characters can join. But the skavenpelt wouldn't be good in Skrox anyway since Krox only get 3 supporting attacks.
BRB page 97. "what units can i join?". unique isnt listed as one of them, so you cant join unique units.
the bell may have a grey seer, (skaven mage). and the other unit may have a characer in the back with a whip. (forget his name)
It isnt, just funny to have a giant unit of frenzied S6 Skinks is all. I also put Tehenhauin in the unit to make it Unbreakable and S8 with Mind Razor; at least I did until you dropped the no characters in SKROX units bomb.
adding tenehuain would NOT make the skinks get S8 from mindrazor. Having a higher Ld in the unit will not change what Ld is written in the profile of the skinks. Also, as i wrote in my last post, the point is moot ince you can not add characters to SKrox units according to page 97 in BRB.
I also do not think that was the intention of rule, I think it was an over sight due to the rarity of the Unique unit. And isn’t a named character Unique in its own right? So should be able to join SKROX unit. Under Unique Units (page 87 BRB) it says that it will specify any special rules for the unique unit in you army book where it is applicable (I am paraphrasing). There is nothing in our army book that says characters cannot join a unit of SKROX. For all intensive purposes, they are still just infantry. Plus as was pointed out Krox are an upgrade to a Skink unit and Heros and characters can join Skink units just fine. This was all discussed in the Slann joining Skrox unit thread.
Hence they are unique and you can not join unique units. There are many glitches between editions, and this is surely one. that does not mean you can make up rules (unless you house rule it ofc). just check the ogre FAQ about butchers with magic armour. that proves beyond a doubt that it doesnt matter what is "logical" whn GW makes their rules judgement
I like playing by the rules as much as the next guy but in this particular case you just have to use common sense and hope that you're playing with someone who does as well. I've never played competitively (meaning tournaments and the such) so I don't have to worry about that as much. Playing in that environment sounds like it takes a lot of fun out of the game...
I personally believe this is incorrect, and we can disagree all day long until an FAQ sets it straight . I saw your post in the thread I referenced in an earlier post (Slann joining SKROX) where I think it was either Stewart or Arli that pointed out where the flaw in this particular interpretation of the rule is.
Your a lucky individual then, the shop I play at (and the shop we play against) is full of power gamers who go by the word of the rules rather than the spirit of the rules, basically if GW saves money by printing less words per page or such, someone goes by it that shortened way and cant be stopped because they technically are not cheating, ruining the game for others. Personally, I agree with the idea that a character can join a Skrox unit, it may have the unit type Unique but that's a technicality due to it having both infantry and monstrous infantry, BOTH of which a character may join.
OK, just give me one more go at this then... Take the quote from the FAQ So, you guys think that you should see SKrox as infantry. so characters can join them, but when an ogre tries to stomp them you whip out the above quote saying that he cant cause they are not infantry? i mean come on! you cant both have your cake and eat it. and if you are talking about "logic" or "realism" isnt it logic/realistic that said ogres could stomp the unit but only hit the kroxigors? Warhammer is a strategy GAME not a strategy SIMULATOR. hence there are rules that sometimes dont make much sense, but they make the game easier to play. here GW has been nice enough to settle all doubt to the SKrox unit by saying that it is unique. end of story
Lot's of interesting discussion going on here for sure, but I think I'd try to get the thread back on topic with this: Ok so the TG unit with skavenpelt is gonna take a huge amount of points, but what about a regular Saurus unit? Or would it simply not be worth because of the Skink Chief's frailty? Don't wanna get the BSB into too much of a pickle when he's not that good a combat hero.
