I have seen a number of army lists including a Skavenpelt Banner on a Slann in a unit of Temple Guard and I think that is a sound tactic. I have been thinking, however, that the banner may be even better on a unit of Cold One Riders due to both the mount and riders gaining the extra attacks. My initial thought was to use the banner on a Scar-vet BSB, and put him in a unit of 15 CoR deployed 8x2 with spears. This unit would would put out 35 str 5 attacks on the charge (plus predatory fighter attacks - average of 5/6 extra) with 24 str4 attacks from the Cold Ones. I make the assumption that the frenzy applies to the Cold Ones due to the wording of the banner, the cavalry rules regarding transferring of special rules, and the frenzy rule itself. I think that applying frenzy to both the mount and rider is the correct interpretation, but please let me know if you feel otherwise. The questions I have are: 1) Do you think this is a competitive build or useful way to deploy the Skavenpelt Banner? 2) Would the unit remain frenzied if the Scar-Vet BSB was killed and the banner lost? I ask this knowing that the rule for frenzy states that the only way to lose frenzy is by losing combat, but it does strike me as odd that if the magic item was destroyed that the unit would still be frenzied. I have included an example list to show the sort of build I was thinking of. It basically has a lot of chaff/redirecting units, and two heavy hitters. Slann w/ Wandering Deliberations, Dispel Scroll Old Blood w/ CO, GW, Glittering Scales, Dawnstone Scar-Vet w/ CO, LA, Shield, Spear, BSB, Skavenpelt Banner Skink Chief w/ Terradon, Spear, Shield, LA, Dragonhelm Skink Chief w/ Terradon, Spear, LA, Enchanted Shield, Dragonbane Gem 10 x Skink Skirmishers 10 x Skink Skirmishers 10 x Skink Skirmishers 10 x Skink Skirmishers 10 x Skink Skirmishers 10 x Skink Skirmishers 10 x Skink Skirmishers 10 x Skink Skirmishers 10 x Skink Skirmishers 14 x CoR, Spears, FC 26 x Temple Guard, FC, Gleaming Pendant 2498 Pts
It's the same case when a Magic Resistance Character dies in a unit. The unit then loses the MR rule since it don't belong to the unit. So if your Scarvet dies, Cold One riders don't have frenzy rule. So the unit loses it. Skavenpelt is more suited in a Templeguard Slann because you can combo with Razorstandard or even Jaguar Standard for a surprising game changing longe charge. (you can cast hand of glory to boost Movement and charge next turn with 4+d3 + 3d6 remove lower inches). Also your Slann will be unharmed by pit of shades, purplesun, cannonballs, have more wounds and ward saves to deal with death magic snipes. And can wear more magic items to deal against item snipe spells such as arcane unforging of high magic. I like the idea to get a model with 6 attacks of F4 . But I'll never purchase spears in Cold One. Only +1 S on charge on the half of the attacks dont seem to be worthy for 4p/miniature. I prefer to invest in more magic support to get at least two tries on Wyssans to buff the cold one riders. I should put 12 Cold One Riders 5 in first rank 7 in second, as a personal guard of your Oldblood/Scarvet and his bannersaurus the BSB scarvet. In a unit of 7x2 rank and file. Each character at the flanks of the unit, so if you get charge in a flank, you can make way with the not engaged hero/lord so they can only hit your heavy armored heros. So it is combat resolution deny as they can only do 5 wounds and its so hard to wound those saurus heros/lords. 8 wide is nice but you have to find a battle when you could put the whole 8 in b2b to an enemy unit. I'll be trying once i get my cold ones ready, this unit. If you have already tested it, plz battle report it !
