8th Ed. Skink Chief on ripper

FIrst of all hi - Been following Lustria-Online for about 2 years without joining, but with the new book a thought came to mind.

I was thinking whether anyone else noticed that a Chief on a Ripper gets cheated out of hi Bloat Toad? We're paying 40 points for rhe mount, just a with an individual Ripper in a unit, and while the indivudal unit gets to bload toad rage it all out and eat toads, while our Skink chiefs ride hungry rippers and go without d3+1 frenzy instead of +1 frenzy.

It seems to me that purchasing a Terradon becomes an almost certain buy, even though the idea of a Chief on a ripper would have thrilled me (even with frenzy), when i thought he had a tonne of KB attacks - the risks of frenzy, i feel, are not mitigated by +1 attacks.

What are your thoughts on this?

Sadly, it appears that you are correct since "toad rage" is not listed as a special rule for ripper mounts but it is for ripper units. While not great, it does make a skink chief actually useable. For about the same price as a scar vet with mundane armour, the chief/ripper combo can have a 2+ save and the ripper does lend an extra 3 x S4 KB, AP attacks plus stomp. Now, if he could also exploit toad rage that would have been amazing. Who knows, perhaps it will be amended with the FAQ.

I believe it wouldn't make much difference for the opponent on the field if they shared the buff, and it would make a perfect sense fluff wise. Too bad Chiefs are not toadders

Until the FAQ confirms that Chief can join Terra or Ripper units, I see no point of fielding them aside from warmachine/mage hunting/suicide bombing
I believe both mounts do well for this purpose and also believes that ripper model leaves a better impression

I have fielded Skink Chief on Ripper as a kamikaze bomber, equipped with Egg of Quango
My friend look stunned when I inflicted two wounds on his dragon mounted mage before the combat started

I like the Kamikaze Chief idea, and my oh my would it work better (well a little at least), with d3+1 attacks instead of +1.
It seems to me to be something they forgot to do, as the price-tag is identical, and it doesn't make any sense that his mount isn't equally toad hungry.

I do hope they FAQ it, since it would be an awesome mount.

You've convinced me that he works without as well though, 3 str 4KB attacks are enuff, i just like my cake better with frosting.

Frost him up for me GW.


I fear for his frenzy though, both with and without d3+1, since LD 6 won't keep him out of charging headlong into anything without careful management, now i haven't played that many games, but target managing him feels chancy.

Interestingly, looking at the newest white dwarf (where they showcased LM) in the skink chief write up they mention the skink chief leading a unit of terradons/rippers.....

I would take that to mean you can!!

I would take that to mean you can!!

Because the White Dwarf crew is completely competent when it comes to rules, and it never contain errors. Such as a My Will Be Done for Tomb Kings granting the Prince's unit WS10 through Fencer's Blades in a battlereport, that'd never happen!

Yesterday I almost killed a dwarf lord with a skink chief on a ripper, too bad he was immune to killing blow, or it would have been really awesome ^^ what I intend to do is that chief on ripper can get the 1+d3 frenzy attacks, just not get to place a bloat toad. I think it's meant to be that way, 'cus the chief wouldn't go and put a bloat toad himself, but the ripper still hates the bloat toad.

That way one build I've been thinking for a skink chief on a ripper is:

Skink chief on ripper: 126 points
Light armor, shield, spear, dragonhelm, seed of rebirth, toughness potion.

It's quite expensive but also can take some hits. 2+ as and 6+ regen and 2+ fire ward, and for the one phase you got T6. Hopefully it manages to charge (with saurus/temple guard/skrox unit) challenge and then survive the hits and let ripper rip with its 4-6 attacks which re-rolls to hit

That's the way I've been playing it the 1st part rule says you place the toad for each rippa unit

The second half just says any rippa attacking a enemy unit with a toad in gets d3+1


Ive Had fun with chief on a rippa gave him the egg and the relic blade and charged him in to a terrorgiest in the flank popped the egg did 2wounds did 1 wound with blade terrorgiest did one wound back which I was lucky and saved enchanted shield saved his ass popped him in combat res

Also in different game charge a dwarf iron breakers with a bsb attacked the bsb failed to hit with all the nearly forgot the frenzy attack got a hit and luckily got a 6 killing blow the bsb failed his ward and went down lol

I also believe that GW meant for the Chief's Ripper to gain the D3+1 attacks, HOWEVER, the rule does not say ANY ripper.

"When fighting in close combat against a unit with a blot toad marker, THE Ripperdactyl's frenzy grants...and THE Ripperdactyls re-roll..."

Sadly, it doesn't say ANY Ripperdactyl, so the use of the word 'the' would infer that the rule is only talking about the Ripper with the rule.

So, RAW, it seems that the Chief's Ripper would not get bonus attacks, but I expect it to be FAQ'd so that he does when we get or FAQ/errata.

I think it would mean all rippers in general - makes sense because I'm sure any ripper would attack any blot toad

I think it relates only to the "Ripper Frenzy" rule. If it just said frenzied units get D3+1 extra attacks, then units with the skaven pelt banne would love to go for the toad too.

I think the reason the chief's ripper doesn't have the toad rage rule is so that he cant place the toad in a unit. Otherwise I'd have 50 chiefs on rippers for 50 units on the board. But logically his (and other rippers) should be able to go for the toad

I agree that it would make sense, but the rule states "the ripper's frenzy" and not "the rippers' frenzy". That would mean that only the one ripper would get it (the one with the rule). The Chiefs Ripper doesn't have that rule, and there is nothing in the Toad Rage rule to suggest that it is army-wide if you read the rule very carefully. That said, I am almost positive that they will FAQ it to say that the Chiefs Ripper gains the bonus. It just wouldn't make sense otherwise. Play it how you want because I'm sure it's a mistake on GW's part.
