So I was thinking of putting either one giant unit of skink cohorts w/2 or 3 kroxies in it or 2 smaller ones with 1 or 2 kroxies in it. They are cheap and with a Slann using light or life they could be very dangerous and effective against smaller blocks and flanks. What do you think?
It's always a risk running cohort units. However you've already got the right idea out of the start gate. Cohorts are best on the flanks and in small units. If you go too large they become unweildy and you relegate them to frontal combat. This is a bad plan because skinks do not belong in combat. Generally you'll loose greatly in combat resolution because of the amount of skinks you lose. Your only saving grace is if you have an uber large unit that maintains more ranks and therefor stubborn. Using Life or Life will help the unit but you still have to deal with the skinks having virtually no save (usually a 6+ ward as their shield save is negated by str 4+) Giving them regeneration, higher toughness, and or bringing them back to life is all well and good but does little for combat effectiveness. Giving them ASF and higher initiative is nice for combat effectiveness but they still die in droves. As I said at first. Small units on the flanks. 1 Krox and 10 Skinks, on the flank where attack backs are minimized. Good luck!
You know you can also beef up the unit by putting in a skink chief. I mean I can buff him up to be as strong and as durable as a scar vet. I mean yeah he is still a skink but he can dish out a couple of head knockers maybe up the stakes a little along with your kroxigors. In my area I play a lot of skaven. I was thinking of investing in a 2 kroxigor/ skink cohort unit with a tooled up skink chief and a skaven pelt banner that makes them have frenzy and rerolls against skaven. With a slann's magic I can make a nasty suicide unit that can run fast and dish out a lot of attacks. I mean its not going to be my meat and potatoes unit but it seems like a really fun unit to play with.
I don't think cohort units can take magic banners. Otherwise you'd have to make that SP a BSB and I'd not wanna risk him in a unit like that. Good concept though!
I don't understand the rules very well, but I'm looking to field a skink cohort w/ Javelins to redirect and pick off weaker units on the flank. Against slower units I can park them a few inches away and just throw sticks, then flee against a charge, to rally and go back to throwing sticks with poison (really annoying harasser!). My question (for 7th edition friendly group) is whether a Krox would help to rally the group from a flee to get back in close and start throwing again? Or am I better to go with a drummer/priest? I was thinking 10 skinks just to redirect and harass. Thanks!
The only thing that will aid your unit in rallying is to have a musician in the unit and a hero in it, for better leadership. Also if you have your General near by it'll help.
I love running my skrox units on either side of my TG with a lore of light slann. Speed of light and Pha's protection makes most normal units hit only on 6s. I have enough skinks that it usually is not a problem as far as losing them goes. Throw in Birona's time warp and they get really dangerous.
