you can hide them in units of skink skirmishers. that will protect them from ranged attacks (just avoid CC :) ).
you can upgrade them to L2 - I suppose you know that already. to boost the priest a bit, plaque of tepok is a good item, which gives you 1 more spell. with 3 rolls, you have a bigger chance to get at least 1 "bigger" spell.

tell them to check page 77 of the rulebook. a character that joins a skirmisher unit gains the skirmisher rule, as long as he stays with them (the character can not be mounted).
but before telling them, try to bet with them first, maybe you'll win something :D

the priest could also join a unit of chameleons, he would get the skirmisher rule, but not the chameleon rule. not sure how would shooting on the unit be resolved in that case. probably you would have to randomize...

I go all beefed up with flying cloak, plaque and lvl 2. Sure a gun line will blow his face off but 20inch movement can keep you out of charge arcs and, not knowing anyone with a gun line, mine never seems to die but really annoys enemy units.

What was that my Skink just cascaded took 1 wound and survived while killing 5 plague priests and then chain lightninged your whole army well there's only one thing to say to that...squish.

I keep mine cheap-- LVL 1 with a scroll or the Cube. He's my scroll caddy and hides in a unit of skirmishers. Lore of Heavens, on the whole, just isn't worth the amount of dice you use to get it off.

I used to run mine with cloak of feathers, flew it around the back of everything, then charged it into the rear if it would cause panic tests. Reckless, I know, but still fun to watch. Not sure if you could do that in 8th edition.

you are talking about games over 1K, right? because if u can't bring a slann, a L2 priest with Heavens is just fine. I agree there is no sense to bring him (other than L1 scroll caddy), if u got a slann.

I don't even bother with them at under 1k, I'd rather tool out an oldblood/scar vet and pad my troop totals to make up for a lack of magic. I truly despise heavens.

Let's not forget putting a priest on an EotG! I almost always run a Slann along side an EotG for a devastating Magic phase. I usually tool my priest to have lvl 2 and plaque of tepok as well for that extra spell and extra umph in casting. Plus you get the added advantage of the Engine.

I like to take two. On one I will make him lvl 2 and give him the plaque of tepok (for 3 spells). The other I will give a force scroll (any double is a miscast and IR). I will upgrade the second to lvl two as well. I will roll the 3 spells first (dropping to the first three spells-leaving comet open). Then when you roll the two for the second priest, you should get a double, when that happens, you get to pick Comet of Cassendora. Use the force scroll and throw 6 dice at the spell (higher level). IR then sit back and wait for the chaos! I have had mixed results with this. But it is fun to do.

Then you run into cannons, stone throwers, and other template weapons and learn why this is a bad idea.

My main opponents never use any artillary, would this make the eog priest a viable option?

On the other hand that means they are not shooting at your Slann.

I've had VERY good results with my EotG even against armies with war machines. Generally speaking I will specifically take an EotG if I'm going against a shooting heavy army so that I can use the 5+ ward save! I don't think war machines really get hit too hard with shooting and the only time I've lost it is when I was foolish enough to charge it into a combat I couldn't win on the charge.

Don't forget also that because the EotG is considered a mount for the priest. Monsterous mounts and the riders are considered a single model so that if you give your priest an item which allows a ward save the mount also recieves that ward save.

Perhaps you go against people with hordes of war machines but even against an experianced dwarf player I've not really worried overly about getting it shot down.
