I'm thinking of taking two Skink priests as part of an 800 points competitive list: one will be level 2 and the other will have Plaque of Tepok and be level 1. However, I only have one unit of 15 skinks, which I want to be able to use really aggressively - but I don't know how to protect my skink priests from enemy wizard hunters, whilst being able to see enemy units to zap them. Any ideas for this points level? (Btw, as part of the custom selection rules, I'm only allowed to spend 200 points on Characters in total).
to be honest, take one priest and make him lvl 2 and carry the plaque. it isnt like a second priest adds very much at this level. you just saved 65 points. go buy another unit of skinks for that and hide your one priest in it. you can now use your old skink unit as offensively as you wish. problem solved
How about a Skink Priest at Level 2 with Diadem of Power and Ruby Ring of Ruin? Combine that with 40 Saurus, 10 Skinks, and a Salamander with extra skink.
Personally, I would drop the Ruby Ring and use those 25 points to put 5 more skinks into your unit. Having the Diadem will help for dispelling so that's not a bad choice. At an 800 point army, I rarely go for a maxed out Hero having preferably to use those points in troops. And if you decide to bunker your priest in the skink unit.. then I would consider more skinks as opposed to a single magical item. Just my opinion. - Lord Cedric
The ruby ring is pretty essential in an all comers list as you need something to deal with ethereals. 25 pts only buys 3 skirmishers which I'm assuming those 10 skinks are, so its not exactly a huge point sink.
With its current build, my Skink priest will get a definate magic missile, as well as two spells. He can also get two extra DDice when needed. If I get Comet, my opponent will try their all to dispel it, then I cast with two dice Fireball, and kill their ethereals or whatever. They can choose to kill my priest, but surely 40 Saurus is more of a threat.
I can understand the Ruby Ring's importance with ethereals. And perhaps it's more of a geographical approach with me as most competitive lists under 1000 points around here are not magic-heavy and.. interestingly enough now that it has been brought up.. hardly any VC players around here too. Kinda wished we had a GW store nearby but nearest one for me is several hours one-way. My "local" gameshop is 45 minutes away. Anyways, back on-topic. Overall, I like your list and think it would work well for all-comers. Good luck and don't forget to post any battle reps if you can - as I am interested in how your list does! - Lord Cedric
At 800 points, you have to get the charge on them. DO NOT LET THEM CHARGE YOU! If they charge, you are done. When they get the charge, the knight units will be Str 6 with lance formation. Skink and skrox cannot hold up to that at 800 points. Suarus warriors are the way to go for this. The best advice I can give you is to not let them charge you. At 800 points you should see maybe some basic archers or a unit of man at arms with a unit or two of knights of the realm. Lord Cedric may be able to shed some more light on good stratetegies against them as he has played them for a while.
It'd be quite difficult to not let them charge you, given that Saurus only Move 4. I could use the skinks to re-direct but any good opponent will se straight through that tactic. If I get a magic missile from Heavens, that might help whittle them down a bit, or perhaps a good shot from a Salamander.
