Hey guys- I'm new to Lizardmen, as I spent most of my time before now in the realm of 40k, but have found a great interest in the fantasy side recently. As such I picked up the cause and am fielding a setup of scaly marauders par excellence. That being said, paging through the LM army book, and reading the tactics pointers on Skrox groups, I got an idea. Everything seems to point at it being a static CR overwhelming flank attacker. This makes sense, though I figure if I'm reading correctly they could be quite a distraction. 20 Skinks, Full Command 3 Kroxigors Sun Standard of Chotec (-2 on Missile attacks against the unit from within 12", or -1 from outside 12") Front rank of 8 Skinks, with 3 Krox and 2 Skinks in the second Rank and third ranks, with a row of 8 more skinks encasing in the back. My theory here is that while the unit would make a fairly effective flanker, it's mobility and distractive nature (are you really going to let three krox and that many javelin hurling skinks run across the table unchecked) allow them to be a serious screen or bait. Furthermore, if they ignore it, the charge from three krox's just makes my head hurt. Yes, it's expensive, 347pts. Yes, there are probably better uses, including three seperate units with one krox/11 skinks. In my head, this seems like a fairly useful application. Is it possible to link in the Banner? After looking into it further, I can't seem to get a straight yes or no. Anyone tried this? Thoughts?
No one has tried this. Mostly because it is against the rules. 1. You need 8 skinks per Kroxigor, so the minimum for 3 Kroxigors is 24 skinks. 2. Skink Cohorts cannot take a magical banner. 3. Your points cost is off. 24 Skinks Full Command 3 Kroxigor would only cost 352 points with the banner, which they cannot take.
While waiting for a response, I was doing more research. Can you attach a Skink chief to the unit? And since he can take magic items up to 50pts, could he take the banner? Or are magic items separate from banners? The unit I was considering would (now) be: 24x Skinks with Musician (126) 3x Kroxigor (165) 1x Skink Chief with Light Armour, Shield, Javelin, Sun Standard of Chotec, and Venom of the Firefly Frog (117) Unit cost: 408pts
A Skink or Saurus taking a magical banner cannot take any other magic items so you'd have to drop Venom of the Firefly Frog. Honestly, I think you are making this unit too expensive with the chief, taking up a rare slot with him and are overly worried about shooting. Most opponents aren't going to waste many shots on that unit. You'd spend 120 points on a chief with that banner. For 70 points you could line 10 skink Skirmishers up in front of it and screen it. That would be a much more efficient use of points. You'd be getting 20 poisoned shots within 12" and stand and shoots are hilarious fun. As wide as 10 skirmishers are you could even screen something else.
Interesting. Yeah, when I saw the points total rack up I was a bit on the concerned side. Thanks for the input bud
No problem! Glad I could help. When it gets down to it when you toss a character into that unit and a banner worth even more victory points you would then need the banner because I would totally shoot the snot out of it. Worth less, it's less of a target. And with good movement you can cover it well and keep it on a flank.
Yeah, I've been building my list and I think I might toss it in the list threads, just to see what y'all think of my convoluted ideas. The chief does add an additional 3 S4 attacks though, which is a nice complement to the already 3x3 S6 attacks on the Krox's plus whatever you can get from your skinks. Though as you said, it's an absolute target for anyone when it's that large. But then again, that was my original intent, wasn't it?
most people should ignore that unit really... i would at least. even 3 kroxigors can't do that much damage and becuase the unit can't turn its not that hard to outmanouver.
