This might be a ridiculously stupid question, but is the slann model still metal? Browsing through the forum, there are lots of references to it being in finecast? Jon
No, it is still metal. The references you have seen refer to the upcoming finecast slann. To my knowledge, it is not out yet and there is no estimated release date.
Yeah still metal. It will go resin at some point, but with christmas coming up and VC in January I guess not for a while now. Odd that they did the Oldbloods but not the Slann. If you're superstitious, get it in metal though. Nobody wants a miscast wizard.
The GW resin stuff so far is infamous for being riddled with bubbles, miscasts, warped pieces, detail ruined or missing etc. There are a lot of people happy with it that have got decent sculpts, but also loads of people that have had to return crappy casts.
Finecast miniatures are notorious for its miscasts - bubbles, missing/warped items etc. (i got a Zoanthrope with two right arms once) Generally crappy quality for "the best quality miniatures in the world" according to GW. IMO not worth half the price they're charging for it. Also a reference to a wizard miscast, usually resulting in your own wizard exploding, rather than the enemy.
Oh haha. I knew that. I'm dumb. I was thinking miss casts. Like metal slann have good mojo or something. And it was superstition that resin mages fail their casts more often or something. XP
Thanks for the replies guys. There isn't a rumoured eta on the finecast slann? Thinking of waiting until its in finecast before starting a lizardmen army Jon
Waiting is up to you, but from what Ive read on Warseer so far, I have not heard of an eta - too much rumor mill on Vampire Counts and Empire and other non-lizzy stuff. Personally, I would start collecting now and get put together what you can and paint - as that will take up most of your time. Unless your gaming club or store is a stickler on wysiwyg models, you could always proxy in the slann - base size and model facing is the important factor. Just a thought. - Lord Cedric
Well the first I heard it was meant to come out in august/september, but obviously didn't. Now its anyone's guess. GW seem to be gradually releasing more metals in resin every month so it could come any time in the next year or two. These days it is possible to fit a Slann in a 1500 point army, but really I wouldn't take one until 2k plus so you could easily begin the rest of your army and get a fair way through it while waiting for a Slann.
Sometimes people claim that GW has fixed all issues with finecast (or finecrap/failcast), but i know atleast two people who received a miscast (mould disallingend) brand new mangler.
People are also having lots of trouble with warping, bent parts and large bubbles on the jabberslythe.. There is no way I could ever feel like I am getting value for money from a GW resin kit unless the price dropped very very significantly, so I doubt I will ever buy one. Glad my LM army is pretty much finished and all in plastic/metal!
i recently discovered my DE dreadlord had bent in the hot weather we had in Brisbane recently (34 degrees or so) Because the model's weight is only supported by the Cold One's back foot, I'm going to have to prop the Cold One up with the base detail somewhere near the chest to make it more stable. Not really a fault, just badly designed for the materials. Another thoughtless "use the metal mould for a Finecast" example. here's a pic of what it should look like if you're unfamiliar with the model http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440048a&prodId=prod1160076a He now leans about 30 degrees or so to the right, until I rebend with with a heat gun.
Models melting in 34º heat? Lol. Means I can just never buy resin, I guess. Brissy summer coming up, and I don't have air-con.
Consider that the failcast stuff was released just in time for the UK summer (where they consider 30C a heat wave lol) and there were many cases of models bending and melting in the UK summer. I guess thats going to be one of the big reasons why I will never touch the material until they have actually fixed its problems. We get days up to 45C, those things will never survive an Aussie summer. It will be very interesting to see how many reports crop up of models melting in the next few months, and what GW does about it if anything.
This is terrible news. I'm due to deploy to the middle east in a few months and I was planning on having models shipped to me.
I'll testify to that - I had a Haemonculus that bent over the summer, god knows what its like for you Aussies! I've so far been fairly lucky with my finecasts though - I'd say as a general rule to avoid the first set of moulds they do (so advance order with caution), as these are usually the worst cast, and always check them out in the shop if you can so you can get replacements. GW are usually pretty good with getting you replacements if you need them.
you're in Brisbane too Mossy? true, i've never had a problem replacing miscasts. GW are definitely not living up to their boast of best models in the world though!
