I was reading a battle report where a person had put both BSB and fencer blade on his slann mage does this really work? It feels like it shouldnt work.
Fencers blade is ws10 right? So we're still talking 1a at S3. I just don't see the point unless I'm missing something <.<
It's a slight defensive upgrade, since it makes many opponents hit him on 5s in melee combat. I agree however, not generally worth the points. And if the original question was, "Can the slann take both a magic banner and a magic weapon?", the answer is yes.
But if the slann mage is a BSB he shouldnt be able to take fencer blade because it is a paired weapon that comes in pair p.173 and the flag carrier usually cant carrie a shield p.94. How can he then carrie a flag and 2 weapons?
The Slann has a special rule that allows him to take both a banner and magic items. (Just assume the banner gets attached to his chair, and the Skink attendant wields any magic weapons.)
There is no rule preventing you from taking a shield or paired weapons on a BSB. I think you are confused because in the older books a BSB was not allowed to take a shield, however GW stopped putting this in their books about 5 years ago.
Basically, there was an FAQ a while back that said if a Battle Standard Bearer refuses a challenge and gets sent to the back of the unit, that unit no longer qualifies for Hold Your Ground. This is pretty sucky for the Slann BSB once the unit champion is killed, as you don't really want him to get stuck in combat with some kind of blender Lord. So the idea is that you give him the Fencer's Blades, and between WS10, 4+ Ward and his Wounds, he should be able to survive a combat long enough for the Temple Guard or whatever to break the enemy unit, or for help to arrive.
