After playing most of my tourney with a TG Slann setup and not being overly impress by TG for their points I thought I'd try Slann in Skinks. Some advantages I've found: When running any lore other than life, miscasts can be a real pain and blowing up in a unit of TG can cost you 70 points a go. In Skink Skirmishers the common miscast of hitting everything in base contact is avoided. And the small template BOOM! only hits 4 skinks if your setup in 2x5 formation, or 2 skinks if you want 1x10. The speed is limited by the slann but 360 degree movement is fantastic for getting the slann in range as the bsb or casting and avoiding charges behind enemy lines. You still get the lookout sir role for the infantry And its almost as cheap as getting ethereal (70 vs 50) I think if I'm running life I still like the TG but for all other lores I think I like the skink bunker. Any other thoughts?
i couldnt agree more, tho i play him in TG when i play lore of light too (duhhhh) :d skinks give the advantages a damage causing slann needs if u ask me
i think a unit of 10 may be a bit small, after 6 casualties you dont get a look out sir. I would either make the skink unit bigger or go with the smaller unit but also give my Slann plaque of protection
thats why you bring multiple skink units, and u screen your slann unit with an other skink unit so it -2 for shooting through enemy,-1 for skirmish, -1 for maybe long range?
Agreed I did have the 10 skink bunker reduced to below a LOS and then I lost my slann to a very luck rock lobba. But what I should of done was just move him out of the skinks at that point and hang out near the saurus they are following so you get the 4+ LOS roll and a 4+ ward. Pretty safe then.
I don't see why a Slann in a skirmisher block is any safer than a lone Slann....not that there is anything wrong with a skirmishing Slann. I'm all about new ways of doing things.
The skirmishers give some bonuses, such as he gets a 2+ look out sir, as well as being at -1 to hit for being in skirmishers. Lone slann can potentially get a 4+ look out sir, and for templates, that's not cool.
Agreed, I ran my shadow slann in a skink skirmisher bunker and ran him around until I could get my skink priest in place to do the shadow swap. He survived the entire battle and was a thorn in my opponents side with crown of command and being the bsb.
What did you use the swap for? I'm not sure what you would want to swap for except to get a Slann out of harm's way.
My skink priest had feathered cloak, so once he was in the opponents backfield I swapped spots to be a pain in the butt. You can charge enemy units in the rear at the same time you charge them in the front with a fully ranked unit. +2 for rear, +1 for bsb. I like it. To stop it they have to dedicate something to turn around. By that time you can steed your way out or swap to save him.
Anyone try this with a lore other than Shadow? I was thinking about trying this with Life (yes, I know TG would be better) or Fire. That tactic of flying a Skink Priest behind enemy lines, then switching, though... That sounds like the sort of obnoxious thing I'm looking for...
I really want to try running a death slann but don't know where to put him. The spell ranges are pretty short so you want him in the front line, but without life not much miscast protection. Perhaps TG with Cupped Hands is the way to go.
Ive actually been running a death slann in a skirmisher bunker for my last few games and I love it. Give him cupped hands, loremaster, rumination and ruby ring. Hes done well, only killed himself once but I have been playing armies without a ton of shooting... Definately worth a shot though
death isnt short range, just fate of bjuna is, i nearly always play slann solo death, and trust me, when it comes to sniping chars, 24 inch is a long way for an enemy to take his vengeance sniping a bsb with bane head means u need to do 1 wound (with some exceptins), doom and darkness the unit, and see what sallies are able to do my set up is; bsb, rumination, conciousness, mystery, cupped hands, bane head, standard of disc, (and depending on your points) mr 2 thingy for enemy death wizard and other spells
