    Hi

I just had this crazy idea. What if you gave your Slann a Folding Fortress and put him in a large unit of skirmishers for protection. The skirmishers cost way less than a temple guard and in that tower he can sit comfortably casting his Life spells to boost and regrow units.

What's the point in having him charge forward into close combat in a unit that could be easily destroyed. With skirmishers and Higher State of Consciousness he will be really hard to get out.

This could be an option when playing against an Empire gunline for example. Or charges by elite or horde units. You would be less vulnerable to having your unit destroyed.

    Thoughts?

Sounds downright suicidal! You will be constantly NEEDING to get off extra toughness, regen, and/or regrowth just to make sure the Slann's unit survives combat. The benefit of TG is they don't necessarily need all those boosts to make them survivable.

I am not seeing the benefit of the Tower either...

Maybe I'm not seeing what it is you're expecting the tower to do?

War machines have limited effect. And shooting is reduced to almost nothing. Skirmishers in a tower is really hard to hit.

The only threat is elite units or horde units charging but the idea is to keep your main force pushing forward in an umbrella shape so nothing gets by.

WMs don't necessarily have a limited effect on buildings (at least the ones who use templates). the unit takes D6 hits, but if the template center is on the building, all the hits are with the higher S. example: when a stone thrower hits my saurus in the field, 1 is almost surely dead, but the other 9 around him are quite OK, with a S3 hit. they survive most of the time. however, in a building all are hit with S9 = dead lizards.

Well d6 is not very much. Imagine the shooting it will take. And when finally stripping down to just shooting at the Slann imagine the opponents dismay when he finds out you have the higher state of consciousness...

D6 is more hits than a cannon would score against a unit of skirmishers standing out in the open. So if anything, being in a building makes you much more vulnerable to warmachines than normal. Hard cover is nice against regular BS shooting though. I don't see a situation where the 100pt cost of the folding fortress is justified for Lizardmen.

Nevertheless, against a template using WM, the same unit would still last longer in the field, than in the building.

    Huh?

A direct mortar hit means that the whole unit is hit. In a building only 1d6 is hit.

Yea, but I would much rather he aimed his cannon at a unit of 10-20 Skink Skirmishers in a Tower with an invulnerable Slann, so that my core Saurus units can go free.

    Imagine what that does

Still the Slann can sit there and cast all his magic while skinks die over some turns. He is a tempting target and it will draw fire and yet he is too far away to be charged. Not inside a large expensive unit. Most Life spells have a range of 24" so he can still support from afar. The only downside is the leadership bonus with limited range.. That is a big downside though!

Not true, there is no gear that the slann "needs", especially a life slann.

Why not just put him in a unit of TG in a tower? Sure, they don't get another -1 to hit, but they are tougher with 3+ armour to shooting and so will die less anyway.

But higher state of consciousness and skinks are cheaper! And a more tempting target!

There is no limit to the amount of models in units you can fit in a building. So if you stuck your Slann and a horde unit of Temple Guard in a building you could tie up a 1000 victory points. Just need to hold out for 6 turns.

Saw a guy do it with a giant unit of Chaos Warriors against a shooty High Elf list, he basically just won by denying VPs. Of course everyone told him it is super cheesy and 100% unsportsmanlike.

I still dont see the use of this. A shooty army will kill of all of the other stuff instead and win since they have 500points of usable models more than you do.

On top of that your oponent doesnt need to get an elite unit into combat. Skinks will easily be driven out of the tower by empire swordsmen, marauders, or orc boyz. You say that they wont get through, but without the ld bonus from the slann he ought to be able to sneak a unit in behind your ranks, charge the tower and win combat by 5 and see your 500point unit run away.

On top of that 2 cannons will kill the skinks in 2 turns.

Sory but I feel that the TG is way better at protecting him, will cause more damadge and will get him into a better position.

There's no tactics in taking tower, putting big expensive unit in there
